the bug problem.......feeding help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
**** man, relax. You are making this way too difficult for yourself. The amount we were feeding was MORE THAN ENOUGH and we routinely have crickets hide under the water bowl and in the substrate because the monitors are always full. Babies are not any different. Just change the size of cricket you give them. It's not something that was kept track of strictly either, just when we had crickets to spare or noticed they were looking a little hungry.

Start a roach colony or don't even bother buying them unless you like to buy crickets. I started mine almost a year before I got my two ackies. It takes a while for them to build up numbers.

ok guess i'll just buy 1000 crickets for 25 bucks plus shipping. How long could that last?? 4 months? what size of tank should i keep them in in?? can I breed them?

It is very simple, very very clear. Each food product has a nutritional value, let's just take it to be an alphabet. Mealworms x, crickets y and roaches z, in an ascending order of nutrition. You feed an insect product not because it is of a certain species, but it is of worth in nutrition. I suggest roaches, illegal or otherwise.

Go read up some breeding caresheets if you must have crickets. They're a pain in the ass if you ask me.

reasons not to get crickets
1. hard to breed
2. die easily
3. smell horrible
4. chirping little demons

It would be a miracle if you could keep crickets alive for 4 months. At best, hope to buy in enough for 2-3 weeks, and keep them in a big dry storage box, with plenty of ventilation, food and water, and clean regularly. They're a lot of hassle, and breeding them is barely worth the effort.

Live food is expensive, unfortunately.

Best,
Paul
