I was just siting there enojoying my meal when I heard the dog barking, my dog wouldnt stop barking so I told her to shut up. I think it was like a minute later I kept on hearing strange noises caming from underneath the sofa four feet away from where I was sitting at. I didnt bother to look until I remember that I have to feed my fishes. As I turn around I saw the lid of the tank open and my heart started to beat really fast because I knew for sure I have had close it. I ran throughwards the sofa and I saw my big Albino Oscar laying of the floor almost dry but I refused to pick it up with my bare hands. I raced to the kitchen and I got one of those plastic gloves my mother uses when she cooks. I went back and I pick it up, put it back in the tank and he is there every since not really breathing right. I see what might be dog's tooth bite on him and I m still shocked. I hope he will be ok, cause I dont think I would be ok if it died.
So besides locking the lid whatever can I do to make them not try to jump out? and why do they jump out anyways, dont they know if they jump they will hit the floor and die?

I don't think any fish understand the consequences of jumping out of the tank. I would just weigh down the hood with something and make sure there are no gaps for them to jump out of. If you do this, he shouldn't be able to jump out again. Good luck with him though; hopefully he pulls through.

I hope your oscar is OK.

Hows the Oscar doing??? I wouldnt pick it up with my bare hands either.. fish are so slimey... I almost lost a betta that way...

bit*

A rubber glove is probably worse unless it's brand new out of the pack. Who knows what crap/soap/chemicals etc are on it.

If you don't want to use your hands, use a net.

But nevertheless, I hope the oscar is ok.

I don't like weights but have found that a bit of superglue and one of the many types of cabinet latches.
