The downside of cash for clunkers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as parting the cars out the only part that must be destroyed is the engine. The other parts as far as I know go to the junk yard and can be bought by anyone. One of the reasons they want the cars scrapped is so that the dealers are not double dipping. Forcing them to donate the cars to the needy might be a better bet.

that transaction would not qualify for any money back, read the program, it is to get people into better mileage vehicles

Plus trucks are grouped within a separate category from cars. The EPA doesn't hold trucks to the same standards as cars, as long as they're within a specific GVWR range. I believe they must be over 8000 lb GVWR. Nearly every full size pickup surpasses this category.

If i sold my crappy car for cash the new owner could light it on fire for all i care , it aint mine anymore.

also , why is it bad that the gov is making people drive cleaner cars??

Damn my tempo's got to die I guess.

Ozz you've never seen the South Park Smug episode?

A couple things about the cash for clunkers. The old 86 honda wouldn't qualify. Its for any car that gets under 18 mpg, not just any old car. The payment is a not straight forward $4500 either. It you read the fine print it says up to $4500, which means you might only get $400 for your 92 ranger or what ever. I wonder if there going to scrap out all the engines that are already in the junk yard that are under 18 mpg.

Yeah the only part that has to be scrapped is the engine, but those are the parts that will more likely HAVE to be replaced. In a pinch boby panels can be faked or fabricated, but engine parts are a little tougher. I drive an 86 Regal T-type, it's already hard to find parts for and I'd like to have it running for a good long time. The world would be a sad sad place if you never saw a 70 Chevelle SS or an Olds 442 again.
And the dealers are only supposed to accept $50 for scrapping the car. $50!?? After shelling out more than a car is worth and having it take up space on their lot and hoping the govt approves the the trade and in a timely fashion (stifles laughter) they then have to give the car away for less than the price of the tires?

I wonder if there going to ban the manufacturing of crate engines or if they will be protected for the purpose of collecting. I hope muscle cars stay alive. I don't think they will get rid of them though because they don't have to pass emissions. Not to many people drive there muscle cars as daily drivers either. Even though I used to drive my 68 Cutlass to work everyday when I blew the engine in my escort, lol.
