THE fly fishing thread.

I don't have small hands!!...... they are just proportionate to my height.... LOL!

Yeah, I'll pick up a whip finish tool later today and a hair stacker - that's why I cut some of the hairs off because a few of them were really long, but I understand what you mean. I definitely plan on tying a bunch of stuff and doing a little bit of everything. I really want to tie some clouser minnows and get back to turtle river. I think it would be awesome to catch something on a fly you tied yourself!

So pumped right now!

Lol!

I kinda figured you didn't use a stacker, they make life so much easier! Clouser minnows are money, they're also fairly easy to tie. One thing to keep in mind, is keep the material sparse. The way Bob Clouser ties them is quite a bit different from what you see in most stores!

And once again, for a first tie that elk hair looks really good! They aren't the easiest pattern to tie!

So I tied a clouser minnow wednesday afternoon. I got off work early and went to cabelas to pick up a bunch of materials - whip finish tool, cement, hair stackers, etc. No hair stackers at cabelas. I'm going to have to order them it looks like. My first minnow was with a size 2 Gamakatsu baitholder - They didn't have a single hook style with a straight shaft so I had to go with the baitholder. I just pinched the small back barbs down with a pliers. I used a material called Flashabou in red and a sort of white iridescent color. It wasn't perfect. Just like you said fisher - I used too much material. I could tell when I pulled back the material over the eyes it was too thick, but I had used cement earlier in the ties so I had to go with it. This is what it looked like.

After I had tied and let it dry we headed out to the river again. I didn't know if I should believe in that silly mock-clouser or not, but I gave it a shot. Apparently, it was good enough for the pike. :D

I caught four that night and I had missed at least 3. It works! I can't believe it, lol. :D So now I've got the fly tying bug. Last night I sat down and did three more. They are slightly cleaner - every time I tie one I get a little better. Can't wait to try these guys out too. :D

Yeah, I'll probably have to order hooks in too. Can't believe they didn't have any regular straight shaft hooks.

Yeah that's crazy, our little local fly fishing shop may not have the most stuff, but they have an enormous selection, especially fly tying. I just wish women and their hair feathers didn't raise the price so much!

I wish I had a local fly shop....

Bass Pro has fly fishing gear? I didn't know that.

They have an ok selection...they never seem to have what I need when I go there though lol.

Those flies are looking good! That's awesome that you caught a fish on one, now your really hooked!

These are the hooks I use for clousers...

I also tie the dumbell eyes more towards the middle of the shank, it gives you more room when you pull the material over it.
