I had a great few days of fishing for rainbows, I only caught 5 yesterday and they were all about 8 inches but it was still a lot of fun. Today I had 5 strike but missed them all. I am still figuring out how to catch trout. Caught in the smoky mountains in oconaluftee river

Got out a few weekends ago with the fly rod. First time using big streamers for pike. Got bit off a few times - must have been good sized fish because I had a leader on. Snagged a few of these guys in the process.

Troutslayer/Gangster - you guys know of any decent rivers/creeks in the Pasadena area? My brother just got accepted to grad school at Kaiser and I may be visiting him this fall. Is it worth bringing my gear down?

I got out to a local stream last week and did some fly fishing. The stream is in a state park and every spring and fall the DNR stocks 3-400 rainbow trout. In the past they have all been sterile males - the stream isn't large enough to sustain an actual population so they stock it just to attract fishermen/women.

I went early last week but didn't do too well. The water levels are down and the water is crystal clear. It's tough to fish them with a spinning set up without being spotted. Even farm raised fish aren't that stupid. So I went back out on thursday with my waders and fly rod. I was using a dry fly first, but after casting for 20-30 minutes without a look I switched to a red copper john nymph. That was the ticket. I hooked up 10+ times and landed 8 fish. Took home my limit and played around with the gopro for a while as well.

Hell of a good day.

It's been too long since I held the fly rod. It felt good.

I went out to a local stream yesterday after work. The DNR stocks rainbow trout there in the spring and fall. It just so happens that they released them the day before yesterday, so numbers were good.

The water was high, which makes fly fishing difficult especially in a small stream. The fish hold in areas that are thick with grass and brush that is impossible to fish in, so you fish just outside it, or over the top of it. Drifting was hard. The middle of the stream is moving fast while the sides/eddies are moving slow and that is where you want your fly to stay... so you feed a lot of slack line so the main current takes the slack line from your reel instead of moving the fly out of the strike zone... but slack line makes it difficult to get a good hook set. And let me tell you the fish were hitting and spitting. I bet I completely missed 6-8 strikes - setting the hook and not even feeling the fish, and I hooked, but lost another 4-5, lol. I landed 4-5 as well but it was pretty frustrating at times. It was my first trip out with the fly rod so I'm cutting myself a bit of slack, but not next time.

All in all it was a great night.
