I have owned two gars and two silver aros. Just an aro just a gar and both at the same time. I Like aros BUT the whole drop eye thing is annoying. My first silver was about 20" when it got DE and now I have a tiny silver that I been growing out since it had a feeding sack and one day it spazzed out while I was moving things around and smacked its head into the glass over the water.... DROP EYE again.
Besides drop eye, Aros are skittish as ****. So be ready for splashing, thrashing and the possibility of it jumping out and getting disgusting drop eye.....
The gars I had just ate like pigs and were consuming food off the floor too fast for my polypterus. I swear it was always pooping and if I tried to cut back on feeding then it was snooping around tasting tank mates. The other issue is that they sometimes thrash ur other fish or other fishes fins. Got rid of my last gar when it had my polypterus in its mouth shaking it violently (tho it caused no visible harm) and was shredding my aros tail.
I also sold my gars because at the time I had a 125 and they were reaching the size of the tank width.
To sum it up, I have the little drop eye silver aro now and want a gar instead. BUT I would hate for a gar to thrash my stingray (king of the tank IMO lol)..... Oh and I've only kept spotted florida gars. My 8" silver aro is being territorial towards my 11" orbigny ray when it swims up the sides of the tank I noticed last night.... soooooo yea....
My vote goes to spotted Gar if you don't have anything with long fancy fins in ur tank. Aros are too jumpy and DE sucks THO I prefer the look of a big silver fish (aro) to the prehistoric dark look of a gar since I keep mostly darker fish already (achara cat, polys)
I'm going to try the ping-pong ball thing with the aro and if it gets to a foot and still has drop eye I'm probably selling it for a gar. The aro is always fed with a fat belly yet still looks for pellets on the ground (for my bottom feeders) and is eyeballing my ray all the time so I doubt the drop eye will go away....
+1 spotted gar. DE sucks and looks waaaaaay too ugly and Aros jump too much for a fully filled tank so mine is less than full which I think looks like crap.
