The "giving up fish guilt"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I aggree but at the same time, fish are like anything not man made and they don't always live up to our expectations. IE: the dovii mostly thought to be a glassbanger, up front 24-7,natural terrorizer....and thats not always the case. I try me best to pick fish that will be long term but its trial and error.

Speaking of this, just had to give up my gorgeous 8" Geophagus Itapacurensis. Gut wrenching feeling!

When you've all given away fish for the various reasons, who do you tend to give them to?

Do they go back to the LFS? Online?

Personally I've given a few to a friend (which I later regret doing)
And I gave one JD female to an LFS (which I felt more secure doing...)

i just sell them

Ive been lucky to have dealt with members here in SoCal. Also there are two lfs that i know are somewhat picky about the fish they sell and whom they sell them to, meaning they seem a little nosy at first when someone picks out a certain fish that may need special need/care.

I have always traded in to an LFS . . . I have one LFS near me that is really good about it; and then two others as backups for when they are full

I always hate it when I get a new fish, and I end up not liking it as much as I thought, but yet there is something that won't let me part with it...

we have a local group here, so when i get a fish, that is either given to me, or bought and just doesnt fit in with his tank mates, i try there first. i dont feel as bad knowing its going to someone that knows about fish..

or i buy new tanks.i have a 150, 90,2x55, 2x 20 (and im hunting for a 50 hex) a 30 turtle tank.my house sounds like niagra falls, ..i have tanks in everyroom but the bathrooms, and just the other day threaten my 10 yr old if he didnt clean his room, he was gonna lose it , and i was gonna turn it into a fish room..

or you find a friend that shows interest in fish, and get them interested in fish and have them buy and set up tanks...i have a friend i go involved into fish and she has a 55, a 20 and 2x10 gallons, and this is only been about 6 months. she gets my smaller dont fit ins..

i feel guilty about getting rid of them also, but i understand, its like i get my tank perfect, fish perfect and the challenge of keeping it isnt hard anymore and i want something harder to keep and a tank to redo..

Unfortunately I feel like I'm probably going to give up my fish in a couple of years since I'll be going to college and I doubt that anyone in my house would be able to properly care for my fish while I'm not home. Don't know who to give them to right now since the only LFS I know of in this area are Petco and Petsmart and I want to make sure they'll go to a good home.
