Article is written by Heiko Bleher, but we have 16 year old arm-chair experts discounting it. If this is truly a hype article, would appreciate someone with legitimate knowledge adding to the discussion.

Thanks LBF for an interesting read!

i guess what other people have reported over and over for years means nothing......turn on your tv sometimes = )

That article is so full of errors it's not even funny.

Natural cycle of things shouldn't be shocking to anyone. It's like being surprised it gets colder in Winter.
But the dams are going to change all of that.

The dams are going to have huge flood gates allowing for water to pass through. Fish can still get through the dams without injury and they won't have a huge effect on the ecosystem. In fact it will be good for the ecosystem. The dams will ensure that there is always a deep enough body of water for wildlife to live in.

I don't know enough about this particular situation to question how harmful the dam will be. But i don't think a dam is "good" for the ecosystem, things are usually fine as they have been for all of its existence. Messing with natural periods and cycles messes things up...

It doesn't really mess with it. It allows water and wildlife to pass through. It's alomst like a giant rock it the river. It just diverts the flow.

Uhh i don't think its quite like that. Do a quick google search on the effects of dams....its the contrary.

These dams are designed to allow the river to be disturbed as little as possible. It still creates a reservoir but fish can still get to the other side. It will flood some forest and kill some trees. Big deal, there are like 900 million trees in the amazon.

What facts and data do you have backing up your claim? Dams don't allow wildlife to move freely, they disrupt natural erosion and sedimentation processes. Saying people will plant trees elsewhere is irrelevant and doesn't make any sense.

I'm saying the loss of a few hundred trees is no big deal. The forest is large enough that it won't have a lasting effect. The dams WILL allow wildlife to pass through. I saw an hour long report on the news last night. The new dams they are about to put in ( not sure about some of the old one) have multiple gates and different levels that will be opened every few hours to allow fish and other animals through.
