but usually fin nipping can be ignored so you do not have to worry much about that

Hi!! Im keeping my ornate with a rather large angel fish. Sorry I can't provide any accurate measurements but the ornate is around 9-10" and the angel is "palm-sized" or the size of a saucer. Lately I noticed that the lower fin of the angel seems to have been nipped. The fin tip seems abit jagged. How do I differentiate fin nipping from say, fin rot?

The hardest bichirs to keep are ornates and congicus, ornates because they are quite aggressive. And Congicus are hard to keep because they need a large tank.

you will know its fin rot if there's discoloration at the ends of the fins in extreme cases. also if they stop eating or... they just die..
. i have never had any problems ( medically )with fish. all my information is from what i have heard from people and books. hope this helps

wow thank u! thats the kinda information i was looking for in this thread!

so what Bichir is good for a beginner, i have 120 gallon 48X24X24''

The easiest bichir would be Polypterus Senegalus, can reach 10" max.
Other choices would be:
Ropefish (normally reaches 16" but some people have seen them bigger)
Ornatipinnis Can reach up to 50-60cm. Really slow growers when they have reached 12".

Glad i could help.

I believe that your ornates are the ones nipping at your angels. I once mixed my angels in the bichir tank, One morning i woke up and saw my angels were literally triangle shaped fishes with barely little fins and tails. One angel even disappeared and i noticed a large bulge on my ornate's tummy.
Ornates are toughies really.

I bet the fin nipping ornate is why my weather loaches tail is all gone lol

I feed weather loaches to my bichirs. Weather loaches have some kind of scent that makes a predatory fish to attack. Putting weather loaches with tropical predatory fish is just like putting some feeder goldfish.
