The heck is a ruby silver arowana?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
could be a couple diff things... silver aros under red lighting, silver aros given color enchancing foods by supplier (astaxanthin will pronounce red coloration)... maybe even wild caught. either way "ruby red" is jsut a selling scam not worth the money...

Went back before going to work, different sales person than yesterday. I asked about the arowanas and she said that they're wild caught vs bred. They're less likely to get drop eye. After taking a second look, their fins and sails are redder than the normal silver, they also do look pretty good but I don't think it warrants a 168 pricetag. So I asked why they would cost more than black arowanas who are also mostly wild caught. Her response was "Asian people believe black arowanas to be bad luck so we don't stock them". I left went to another lfs that I am loyal to and saw similar if not the same arowanas for 45. I immediately asked the boss about them and he asked me where I went, so I told him. He tells me "did you see the 3200 dollar blue scaled koi they sell?" I'm not sure if he was serious or cynical but now... After work I gotta go back and take a look >.>.

Gimmick, only three variants of silvers. Regular, albino, and platinum silvers.

There is also a black variant, may even be more rare then a platinum. There have been a couple posted here on MFK, but it'll take some searching to find the threads.

I think there was a melanism black arowana, but never a melanism silver arowana. Never heard of a melanism silver before.
