Thanks! Yes, I trim the plants a lot. Usually about once a week I have to trim a few inches off the tops. Sometimes I've yanked out the bottom, and replanted the top portions to keep the plants healthy.
Jcar...are you planning on doing competition with this tank? It looks good enough to me? Maybe it could be a little thicker at the back, but its still gorgeous.
I think the plants have grown enough that I can now show some pics As I mentioned earlier, I pulled out most of the plants, leaving only hygrophila polysperma as the background plant and blyxa japonica as the foreground. The tank looked cool before, but it was not meant to be a long term setup. I think this current layout will work best in the long run. It will be easy to keep the plants pruned and nothing should get so thick that it obstructs the light and co2 for any other plants.
I also trimmed the blyxa along the front edge of the glass, which I think looks pretty cool! On to the pics!
As for the hardscaping, I think I know what my problem is; the background. I think I should have left it clear like the ADA tanks. The problem with black is, that I'm not happy seeing black. I need to have it completely filled in. With a clear background, you could leave open spaces in the tank and it would look good. And for pics, simply add a white poster board and add a wireless flash behind the tank, pointing at the poster board. That's how they get those sweet pics where the background appears to be lit up.
So that's my dilemma. Since I don't like seeing the background, I have to fill it up with plants. And filling up the backwall with plants leaves very little room for a hardscape. You can see in the sideview just how little room I have in front of the hygro wall. Adding a hardscape would really limit the space in the tank, and I like the open space.
For the rimless cube I'll be setting up God knows when, I'll be leaving the background clear. This tank will have a nice hardscape to it. Sort of Iwagumi influence, but not just a foreground plant and three rocks
