The kid wants a catfish !!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could have a small shoal of hoplo catfish - the mega-cory. It looks and acts kind of like a big corydoras, but it is even more active. It is a total glutton, but peaceful. For some reason they don't seem to prey on even tiny little fish (I have had lampeye killies in a tank with a hoplo cat around 3-4" long for a month or two, and none were eaten. It won't even kill a ghost shrimp) unlike most catfish.

Figured I would mention it because no one else did yet.

+ 1 on the Hoplos, active and don't hide under a rock all day. Another good one would be Flagtail cats.

I love your pictus! I can't tell from the pic, but just so you know there are 2 different types of spotted pictus, there are the ones from Peru and the ones from Columbia, the ones from Peru, this says it better than I can:

"There are two pattern variants; fish from Columbia have small spotting over the entire body, while those from Peru have larger spots on the main body--but this is only reliable with equally-sized fish as the pattern can alter with age

And this "s for the size it will depend on where they come from. Peruvian caught vs. Colombian caught. Peruvian caught are the smaller of the 2. The Colombian variety reportedly will reach 8-10" long, I personally have seen an 8" Pictus. The Peruvian caught pictus will only reach the stated 4-5". The difference is that the Peruvians have the larger spots on their body with smaller spots on their head, the Colombians will have smaller spots all over and very small, almost indestinguishable, spots on their heads.

As for single versus group, in the wild, Pimelodus pictus travels in schools of hundreds if not thousands. They will fare fine as single specimens but I always prefer to keep them in groups with a minimum of 3."

Just some info thought you might want :)

Thanks for the info and props on the tank. Looks like i have the peru pictus and the sand stone is there home as the caves are for the EBJD coming soon. I was told by the fish guy the pictus will be a punching bag for the EBJD but my EBJD are coming in at 1.5" and the pictus are currently 2.5"
