Hi, I have been struggling to identify this lungfish which I bought in November last year as a dolloi which is obviously isn’t ? at roughly 6 inches, it has now just gone past the 2 foot mark. Everything I seem to find ends up contradicting the last piece of information I found! I either think it is a Propterus annectens nigeria, or a aethiopicus of some kind.

Hey guys! My wife surprised me with a 14ish" long long fish for my birthday. It's awesome, but I'm scrambling a bit to get him the ideal setup. He's temporarily in a 29 gallon with a mixed sandy bottom, an abs pipe cave, and a minimal filter. I'm putting together the list to outfit a 120 gallon tank and sump setup for him and some cichlids together, but I'm hoping to pick your brains a bit first, especially about plants and tank mates in your experiences. They said he had a parasite which was removed and he appears to have recovered well but there's visible scarring on his face. We named him Jethro [for Jethro Tull because of Aqualung lol]

Back to the main point... Our lfs didn't really have much info about him and had him labeled as an African lungfish. I noticed he still has external gills and wasn't sure if that means he's a gilled lf, if they'll disappear as he grows, or if he's still in juvenile form?

Thanks for your knowledge, and I'll see you in the other threads!

Can anyone identify the type of lung this is. When I got him awhile ago it was just labeled african lung. He is now almost a foot and a half. But I'm curious what he exactly is. I can get a updated picture if need be. Also this is not his tank. This was from my LFS.

Hello..

I purchased this albino beauty nearly 16 months ago.. at 6-7 inch and it's now nearly 18+ inches. It was told to be albino marble Lungfish, but I doubt the reference. Can any one help me in identify which protopterus is this ???

I guess .. it must be annectens bcz of dark patches and overall shape. I have successfully kept a annectens (West African lungfish) for 10 year and it is still surviving but stop growing or slow down it is at nearly 33 inch from many years..

Thanks in advance.

I dont think ive seen an albino or color morph annectens yet. That doesn’t mean there not out there tho. Albino P. Dolloli are available every so often. Over the years the majority of albino and color morphs like ur example are protopterus aethiopicus. Also, from what im seeing available there becoming more like urs and less “albino”/white… the patches of pigment have nothing to do with a certain species. Albinism is close to melanism…the patches of pigment are black not colored. An albino that exhibits black pigment can be classified as “lutino”… its still an albino tho, hence the red eyes like ur specimen.

Regardless of that, id wager the growth rate also from 6” to 18” in 1 years time sways towards aethiopicus. You’ll know for sure when/if it surpasses the 30-36” mark in a few years time. I too kept a WAL for 10 yrs to around the 30”+ mark. Its still that size. My aethiopicus is 40”+ at 6 yrs old. I too have debated it being a WAL but the growth rate says otherwise. Its hard to tell with them being albino/color morph and they do look pretty similiar to some WAL’s when it comes to head shape/proportions. Mine also has a bit of black pigment. Not nearly as much as urs but as i noted before. The more i see these days… the more black pigment they have.

Thanks.

LFS did tell me right. I was just confused, because both my regular West African lungfish and this albino had nearly same trait and structure.

While a friend of mine have true regular marble Lungfish i.e aethiopicus have different body shape and traits.

Yes.. as you mentioned the head shape resemble to my WAL.. so it got me confused.

Thanks once again, for explaining.
