venom I like your style, its good to see someone call other peoples dumb ****e on here. I am right now setting up a 265 gallon pond and will be using a pool filter pump to turn the water over 5 times per hour. I am going to make the cabinet / drawer style filter. Has anyone else ever tried using one of these pumps? I have read many places that the best practice for rays is a turnover of 10 times per hour.

I would shoot for at least 8x turnover for any large fish but that's just me. I run about 10x on my tank and I love how fast the water clears up after feeding or pooping etc..

Good idea on the air stones under the scrubbies venom

venom I like your style,

thanks..and if thats a self drawling in your avitar..we should talk.

i dont normally go by GPH ..i try and have enough filtration to do at least 4x my tank...like if i have a 100g tank i would put on 4 magnum 350's .

the avatar reminds me of the comic fathom. looks very michael turner art to me.

i will go and take a few quick pics and post for you venom.

ok, frankensump incoming.

lid off, water enters here, usually a filter sock on, so the floss isn't really needed, but i have it there anyways.

two full drawers of scrubbies. i had a 3rd drawer under, in the sump, but removed it for maintenance and just couldn't be bothered to put it back in, so the scrubbies are free floating.

90gal tank with freefloat scrubbies and some floss (it helps to dampen the sound of the water splash, which used to be overwhelming from even upstairs). the water level is quite low atm. coming up on water change time. it started with 45 gal of water in the sump and that is what remains due to evaporation.

where the pump is located. birds eye shot and side shot.

goes back into the tank via a pvc spraybar.

whole shot. ignore the "cover". keeping the moisture in while i cut some brand new acrylic to size for all of my tanks and sump lids.

can see the faulty previous version i had unending problems with, as well as my tank being built here.

my stand is unfinished and yes, my tank is only half painted :P

that thing is sweet. its the same kind i plan on building when i build my pond.
i have those exact scrubbies.

i have a question for you...this is my first sump. i always used HOB or canister filters.
j have a 20g sumo filled with 150 scubbies and 2 gallons worth of bio balls.
i am pushing 1200+gpm. i have the water line at the top of the scrubbies with a lot of air being feed to them.
intake is two 4" socks...is this sump good enough for a 125?

whats the size of that tank you built? you did a really good job.

thanks, it's a 300 gallon tank. 6ft long, 4 ft wide, and 22 inches tall.

the important thing with a sump is to make sure that with the water line it must contain to work, it must also be able to take all the water in your tank that the bulkhead is below. otherwise you'll have a flood if the power goes out.

even with approx 45 gallons in my 90 gal sump, my tank could empty until the bulkhead flow stops and not flood my basement.

with my trickle tower, i don't really need to use airstones since the drop the water takes into the sump creates more than enough air/surface agitation. if i were to make a slope for the water to run down to reduce the noise, i would put in some air stones to up it.

as far as filtration, it should be fine for handling your tank load, my only concern would be the overflowing issue.

funny, i have been thinking about that the last few days..
i think i am going build rubbermaid over flow box this weekend.
i stress out every time i leave for work.

remember not to get the kind that have air vent in the handles if you go for the containers. they were the bane of my existence. i used a rubbermaid for my original sump design and while it stated 50 gal, the handles were over 1/3 down from the top of the container, with air vents, so the water would overflow out of it. with my city's crappy power (get multiple power outages each month), you can guess how many floods and mop up's i had.
