An island somewhere......
I think I've gone thru the entire spectrum of thermometers over the years and have experienced every failure you can imagine.... from a battery going dead to an Arowana swallowing the probe. My question is has anyone found a thermometer that's reasonably priced that isn't completely off in temperature within a few months? I've used the adhesive ones, the coralife probed ones, glass thermometers (but my large cichlids tend to break the glass).... any suggestions?

I'm considering going back to the glass thermometers with the suction cup or weights on the bottom and somehow manufacturing a protective PVC case that will allow ample water flow to be exchanged for accurate readings. Thanks in advance....

Glass mercury thermometers; super cheap and accurate. I dip it in the tank when I check the water params and then chuck it on the shelf ('cause it's crazy ugly and I don't want it in my tank haha).

The laser pointer thermometers are awesome. I sit at the couch, cold drink in one hand, laser in the other. Read the temp in the tank at 20 paces...jk.
Seriously, very accurate. About $30-$200. Home Depot has a Ryobi for $30.

Same as COG Commando for me, glass is accurate and cheap, test the water then lift it out.

yeah i just used the glass ones when i get back into heated tanks im not going to leave it in the tank my old aro broke my last one

Thanks Fellas.... Maybe I will do back to the glass ones and just remove it after each use, at least in the tanks with the more powerful fish. BOLD..., I looked at the Ryobi and it is sorta cool, just not sure if it's 100% accurate thru acrylic/glass. May have to give it a whirl.

If you remove your thermometer after each use, how do you know your heaters have not malfunctioned (unless you test temps everytime you look at your tank)?

I use the Lifegard Aquatics Big Digital Temp Alert so that I can see at a glance everytime I'm in my fish room if things are out of whack. I also have a glass thermometer in my sump that's probably a bit more accurate. The digital temp display doesn't need to be precisely accurate...I just want to be able to tell if the temps are 10F+ too hot or too cold with a quick glance.

Heater failure seems to be pretty common, so having a large display thermometer might help you realize there is an issue with temps before you have mortalities.

Same here but ir for cooking. Good cause u can check the temp of a stream of water to know what the exact temp is.

yea i bought a digital IR hand held unit for less than 30 bucks.says +/- 4 degrees accuracy.

Ive had the same regular glass mercury thermometer in my tank for 6 years and I've had countless arowanas large cichlids up to 16 inches 2 foot catfish peacock bass gars just about everything never had it break or the fish try and eat it no problems at all and always reads temperature perfectly my heater is set at 78 and my tank thermometer is at 78 constantly threw the summer when it's hotter it shows that my tank gets to about 82 then once it's cold and I need my heater back on 78 constantly so for thermometers I use the simple 3 dollar deal and its never failed me once
