The elongatus are easily the prettiest IMO they have a nice red on the top half when mature, well mine do. Aggression is about on par, faciatus get 9 inch tho making the m the bruisers of the 5spots
I think fasciatus actually get a bit bigger than 9 inches. Will, a member on here, has a 4 year female that's 10 inches and a fasciatus/frempongi hybrid that's 12. I have also read that frempongi can get 9 inches with time, where as elongatus max out around 6. Fasciatus is not only the largest but also the most aggressive. I have seen a few tanks with elongatus and frempongi cohabitating somewhat peacefully, but never a mixed community with fasciatus. Justarn, your elongatus are great looking btw. Some of the best I've seen.
I have a 120 gallon tank, I would like to start out with small elongatus, how many would you put in a 120 gallon and could you add other cichlids with them if so what cichlid or cichlids would you add, keep in mind, would start out with young cichlids...
I started with 7 and over time mine decided who was staying and who was going. They are piscivorous so other fish are on the menu, I done well in my 90g with a selection that can be seen in some of my videos on my YouTube channel(Justin Phillips Mfk)
They killed a Shoal of 8 tiger barbs over night, that was a silly mistake, you can see them feeding and growing throughout various videos not all of which they are tagged or named in.
I kept lots with mine in the 90 while they were small, larger green terror, spiney eels, Cory cats, red jewels ect, just nothing bite sized. That's not to say yours won't be killers from a young size, all fish are different.
I have heard in many locations you find 1 species of 5 spot hemichromis and 1 of regular jewel type hemichromis. Perhaps this might indicate they occupy different niches and may have a natural tolerance for one another. I have also heard that you basically never find different 5 spots which each other despite both having large overlapping distributions. If fasciatus is found in one location, elongatus will be absent and vice versa.
Wow!! Interesting, I wish I hadn't stocked my 360 gallon tank already I would like to try one day elongatus, neets, fasciatus, red jewel, and convict in a large tank, perhaps one day...

Lol... Just like the aggressiveness of the cichlids, colors, I wouldn't attempt it unless I had a large tank to put them in. I also like them because they don't get to big, so in a large tank I a better chance to see all the small cichlids that I like in the same tank . Although the fasciatus would be the large one, maybe I would put one of those in there, hmm...
