The natural themed monster fish tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Love the front to back size of the tank (31 inches makes it super sweet!).
I completely concur with the suggestion regarding the stand. I am in the same boat at this time, with a 125g sitting on the Aqueon MDF standard kit stand, planning on replacing it with a "real" one as soon as I can.
Good luck

Yeah I love the width of the tank too. Eventually I'm hoping to do a 36" wide and 72" long but I want to see how this tank fits in the room first. I will likely go steel stand for the big tank and will see the condition of this stand first. I will have a good look at it and maybe put loads of reinforcing inside but I will wait and see once I've had a good look at it first.

I'm also debating about the plant situation I'm really hoping the fish don't destroy them but it's going to be a risk I know. Hoping I can keep alive Vallisnaria, large amazon swords and amazon frogbit on the surface.

Thanks

The rays will tear up the roots of the plants looking for food. And the floaters will most likely get sucked into the filtration. So don’t spend lots of money on the plants. I also tried these things because I needed to experience it myself. I got all of my plants for free or next to nothing.

you can try to fasten the plants to some driftwood or something, that may give it a longer life. I think mine las About 2 months or so when I first got into rays

Okay thats the information I was looking for haha, I think I'll start without plants and then see how it goes. I can get plants dirt cheap so not worried about that but no point adding them if they are going to get destroyed haha. Thanks for the tip

You may get away with frogbit for a while if you have bigger pieces of it. But I would steer clear of duckweed in a monster tank. I find it always gets sucked into the filtration and ends up just rotting in the filter. Just my thoughts, I’m sure others have ways to make it work out.

here is my old ac110 with duckweed collected around the intake. It was neat at first how it formed a ball. But then it was a mess to clean up inside.

This was the most successful flaunt keeping I was able to pull off with rays and aro. It was a planter filled with bio balls and ceramic rings as substrate. Pothos and peace lily inside the planter, with a spray bar from my canister filter feeding into it and hoses leading back into the tank as an additional trickle filter.

lovely tank! May I ask the dimensions of that one? Yes definitely frogbit I hate duckweed haha! I was planning to try the pothos as well! A similar setup above the tank. Think that will be a later project though. Like the peace Lilly too good idea. Off to collect the new inhabitants tomorrow fingers crossed! I can’t wait.
