Shark fin soup. :irked:

I've heard the farm raised bluefin in the Mediterranean is better then WC because they feed them higher quality things with more frequency then they would find naturally. On the episode of No Reservations in one of the Serbian countries (maybe Macedonia or another that started with a C) on the Med and there were Japanese there trying to pay twice as much as they would for WC because the quality is so steady. Granted, 30 years ago I bet WC blues tasted better but now that their diet is being slowly wiped out (whitefish etc) the farmed ones get much better nutrition. There will always be people trying to make a quick buck so there needs to be regular patrols of different reefs and hell maybe even a giant camera post to watch over haha.

Seriously though, as sad as it is to say, there NEEDS to be a lot more people willing to do things like they do on Whale Wars if any of this is going to end. The governments obviously aren't capable of it. I do know of fishermen in SA who will guard their reef from Asian trawlers trying to get at it, with weapons. More people like that need to be around

The sad thing is that all the fishermen are up in arms, trying to fight the regulations, etc. And they wonder why there are no fish.

I hope you're talking about commercial fishermen, not recreational.

We've recently had a review of the catch limits for snapper (Pagrus auratus) here in the northern part of NZ, and the recreational limit was cut from 9 per day per person with a minimum size of 27cm, to 7 per day per person with a minimum size of 30cm. Commercial quotas remain unchanged, as does the 25cm commercial minimum size! HOW THE **** IS THAT FAIR OR SENSIBLE!?!?

I'm dead against commercial fishing in general. Fish, other than commercially farmed, should be a delicacy and a luxury, not some cheap-ass stuff in a can sold cheaper than cat food! I won't eat tuna fullstop, and rarely eat fish that hasn't been caught by myself or friends, and this article is exactly why. The wasteful techniques and huge quantities of by-catch that get dumped, along with the "keep fishing til there's nothing left" approach of commercial operations (and the governments that allow it) make me sick.

Commercial of course - but there are many people (individuals) who poach, or even when legal, have no regard for the ecosystem, or the fish population.

we will eventually frick our selves over or mother nature will and the earth will evolve and repair itself. going to be billions of years before our sun novas or burns out, we as a species will be long gone before then.

First on the hand of farming tuna it is done round the world but it is relatively expensive and serious work. There are project going around about all types of aqua farming ideas out there for many sought after species that have become successful. One such fish is Rachycentron canadum (cobia) currently being farmed in the eastern USA.

Secondly on regards of the trash it has been a huge problem far before now and even before I was born (1992). There are spots in both the atlantic and pacific where trash has settled on the ocean floor in sizes of football fields. Although this does prove to be a huge problem I think this aspect has far less to do with fish becoming scarce than human consumption. People just don't respect the ocean and its marine life and take advantage of it.
Plus some species are a lot more suitable for extinction because of slower reproduction rates.

And just for everyone to know I am an avid fisherman and I do everything I can to ensure the ocean and its marine life is around for my kids to enjoy one day. I call FWC whenever I witness a violation and If the fish is still alive I will grab it and release it myself regardless of what the culprit says.

Sorry for the rant but this really dose need to be sorted out before our wonderful oceans are gone and can't be enjoyed for future generations!!

Speaking of which: I live where the Merrimack River meets the ocean - which is where I used to fish when I first moved (here) for the first 5 years - catching stripers, channel cats, the occasional eel, and crabs (lol.) A Korean couple started fishing next to me, most nights, and they would not put ANYTHING back - literally. They kept ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that came up on their line - including undersize stripers, crabs, tiny 10 inch eels, tiny 8 inch catfish, and the occasional squid.
For the past 5 years, I have not had one tiny nibble at all.

I do not advocate taking undersized fish or trying to oppose what you are saying. But these folks take everything, and eat it, to them its dinner, every bit of it. that is not the same as commercial fishing.
