Thanks, Dan. Yeah I've known similar claims but what is hard to understand is the breadth of this: are 50% of farms so inefficient or these are the worst and constitute only small %, etc.
Depends of the species. In the case of salmon, it's all bad. The feed is primarily made using wild caught forage fish. We are stealing food out of the mouths of wild salmon to feed farmed salmon.
Most other predatory farmed species are not any better. And to make matters worse, Atlantic salmon are invasive species in most the countries they are farmed in.

Google pictures of shrimp farming in Thailand. They are basically clear cutting mangroves to put in these farms. There are some farms that are using sustainable inland ponds, but most are using the clear cut areas.
