The official HOUSEPLANTS thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got a spider plant) also anubias and java fern in my tank.
Really want to get a Chinese elm bonsai
..oh also got a cactus of some kind =)

........ Thanks! (FINALLY, GAWSH.....:p) Maybe that's just how they grow? I dunno...I'm hoping it spreads out and cascades out of the pot. THAT would be cool! Kinda looks like its fixin to do that, don't it? ;) ..........
Kell, I've slacking off learning to use my tech changes & upgrades :-/ BUT you deserve some effort.
Yes, the mother plant cascades down all over, & mine is starting to.
The flowered stem hangs down. I just showed how it lays on pot to begin with & the contrast of stems' health.
This is attempt #2: stem pulled out from the base of mother, with tiny roots already in soil, flowered quick. but the part laying on soil shrivels.
Attempt #1: was cuttings. I stuck straight into soil, no laying on it. roots quick, grow fast, no shriveling but hasn't flowered. yet.

the plant is called a stapelia..... i wouldnt try smelling the flower. its supposed to smell like rotting meat or spoiled meat to attract flys for pollination and whatnot.......... i would make sure it doesnt stay in the house year round. it needs sun... itl prob look a lil bit better if on the patio..... try n let it dry out.... im a plant nerd guess ya got that from my screen name
THANKS for the ID! so googled pic details, & pretty sure it's the s. variegata.
I'm not in the right zone for full time outdoors. my plant zone is "5F to 10F". but I set it in shaded spot. in summer, full sun is brief early morning. now in Fall, bring it in at night. out for weaker full sun.
husband says the flower smelled like a dog turd. lol. I think, mild bandini fertilizer.? LOL. luckily, you can't get a whiff without trying hard.

Cool pics granny

Even got the tank in the background. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Sumo. I shuffled the comp around to point toward a tank.
Funky method, eh. move computer to subject location, not upload pic from devices. LOL@ myself.
just wait'll I untangle the extension cord. hehe

dont use bandini, the nitrogen is too high. use "cactus mix" and fertilize with something closer to 9-4-9. the first number is the nitro. keep below 15 unless diluted. remember drainage is key. dont let it sit in mud... it will get root rot.
I meant, just the flower itself smells similar to a mild bandini aroma (at best). It's in regular houseplant soil. It should have more breathable pot & soil.
can I blend pfs with houseplant soil, to give it better drainage?
We did almost everything wrong. TBH, I never expected it to prosper here. the mother plant is down south in a more even climate.

I've only had this thing about 3 months.?

they have been known to flower without even being rooted. i have tons of plumeria cuttings drying out right now and there growing leaves and flowering. kinda neat. wood chips, decomposed granite, pimice, perlite all aid in drainage. i wouldnt mess with it now cause the weather is changing. wait till spring. look for superthrive in your local nursery. stuff works very well. its plant vitamins that pack a punch.

Oh fun I just started trying to keep plants again so we shall see how this goes...

i have a pachira aquatica, an orchid but its the kind with the really small orchids that look like they are growing off a main branch like a mini tree, not the big ones, 2 air plants and bamboo.

I really enjoy having these plants inside so I hope I can get the hang of keeping these and get more later down the road.
