A carved ammonite I bought in Mexico about twenty years ago.

Here's a little trivia about carved ammonites. In 16th century Great Britain, way before dinosaurs were acknowledged or even known by the word 'dinosaur', it was considered heresy to offer the idea that fossils were of creatures that existed before the Bible. Ammonites were plentiful in tilled/plowed fields and around construction projects. Royalty deemed it wise to commission artisans to carve snake heads at the phagocone (body orifice) of any and all ammonites that were found. The carved ammonites were then explained to the masses as being snakes (a symbol of evil) that were lightning struck by the heavens or petrified in fires.

People that know me think my head is stuffed-full of odd trivia. I think you must be made almost entirely of it...

That is very interesting information, Oddball. Is that ammonite yours or just an example photo? Mine is about 5" across and came from Oaxaca.

Heh, I have a bit of a disadvantage here. I dont like to pay for anything that was taken from a live animal. I have a few Shark teeth that arent fossilized, one on a necklace and one on a keychain, but I never wear them, and I bought the necklace before I realized it wasnt fossilized. (I have worn fossilized ones before though) The Nautilus, Fire Scallop, and Whelk shells in the picture of all my stuff were birthday gifts, and as awesome as they are to have in my animal drawer, I told my parents thanks but not to get me anything that was taken from a live animal, just because. :D
Waaaa???

It's just an example photo. I have a couple hundred ammonites in my collections and in aquaria (for the limestone pH balancing). But, none of them have been carved.
