The Ohio situation. Read- this may effect us all

There are a few people who can house and take care of animals such as big cats. Just like there are few aquarists who can house larger fish such as arapaima. It's true that the majority cannot properly house or care for some animals such as big cats, so they should be restricted accordingly.

A sad situation, seems like it got out of hand with so many large exotics. What a shame they could not be tranquilled and re-homed to some sanctuaries or zoos.

Sorry, I didn't see some posts that were made at the same time I was posting such as why they didn't get moved to a sanctuary. I wonder why this was blocked.

Also, lets keep this thread open. We all have strong emotions on this subject so just keep it civil while expressing them. This is not directed at anyone- just a preemptive warning.

Large animals do not belong in the publics hands. For every responsible owner there are probably 10 that should not even be allowed to drive a car. ( of course they can all have kids of there own if they want to raise monsters! LOL) Our society is always gonna be somewhat hypocritical on this.....The animal lobby will never have the power of say the gun lobby which is able to force through crazy laws and legal respect. For human safety sake i would rather see a tiger in every backyard than a handgun in everyones pants. Animals look better on posters and will gain support easy.....they also have no outdated ammendments to fall back on.

I thought the same thing, I agree with very tight restrictions on who can own big cats, primates, etc. But I dont think that people realize that "exotic" includes the Betta on the kitchen counter

My sentiments exactly, I would hope that Paratheraps or Herichthys won't suddenly be illegal to own, purchase or sell. And of course I do have my eye on some vampire crabs....maybe someday an albino ball python or two....

If bans get placed on private ownership of any exotic, its just one step closer and makes it that much easier for the animal rights nuts to achieve their ultimate goal of ending all animal ownership and use. Yes there need to be restrctions but not an outright ban on all of them. Also with private ownership and breeding it will ensure the survival of some enndangered species. If you don't think it will eventually affect you when bans are put into place your wrong. The fish hobby hasn't seen it as bad as the herp or lage mammal hobby yet but if they lose their battles we will be next

well put.

thanks, as soon as I saw this situation on the news I knew what was coming

While I don't support a full ban, from what I read the state of OH has zero restrictions on the ownership of these animals, which is just as absurd. To get a large cat, bear or primate, there should at the very least be a strict licensing requirement, including inspection of the holding areas, and extensive educational programers for those looking for permits. Not only is the improper care and housing of these animals cruel to them, it can become dangerous to the public. Not to mention, I bet most of the cops didn't go home feeling very good about themselves after being force to slaughter dozens of endangered animals.

To be entirely fair, I suppose keeping animals of most sorts in captivity is quite saddening. There are times when I look into that twenty gallon and think that whatever is in there deserves a better life. I guess the call must be for stricter regulations, though the complete banning of keeping animals seems pretty out of the way.
