I had one of those incodents today that I'm kicking myself over now and wish I had stepped up about it. I was wandering in petco's fish department looking for beef heart and plants when I overheard who I assume is the manager talking to an employee. I've delt with the employee she's great and I know she adopts a lot of the rescue animals that come in. She was getting yelled at for feeding the birds something, forgetting what but odviously by the other womans tone of voice she was in deep for feeding the birds better quality food than corperate allows. The employee was quoting off why the food was better for color, metabolisim and all sorts of stuff but the other one was stonewalling her with "no, corperate rules state that its not allowed and do you really think the next owner will feed their birds good food?"

Its nice to see that petco thinks highly of their fellow animal keepers. Its also nice to know why they were charging for a rescue fish. They had a foot long common plec that someone dropped off last month... I was looking for a pleco and expressed that I had a tank big enough for the monster but the nice employee had to call the manager to ask about it to come back and say it was indeed an adoption fish but it was also $20. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of their rescue fish? :screwy:

I agree with the manager about corporate rules. If they are not followed, then will be in trouble. She is just following orders and trying to save her behind as any manger who manages a big store would. The manager could have stated other things differently to the employee about the next owner thou.

Business is business even if a store owner loves all the animals in his shop he still needs to pay the bills and he still needs to feed all the adopted animals with food he has to pay for.

I can't really find any fault with what Petco is doing in your particular examples, with the bird feeding or the adoption fees. The cheaper bird food is probably just as nutritional as the more expensive brand. Also, adoption fees are the norm, nowadays. I'm hard on corporate stores, but I think they are not in violation of any ethical issues, with these to incidents. Let's be careful in picking our battles.

Heres the thing, sure I go to the humane society for my cats and dogs and pay the 25-100 bucks but they come with shots, first vet check, and fixed. I know walking in the door that I expect to pay that. A place here charges up to $400 for a rescue dog. Thats written into their guidelines. PETCO has it written that their adoption fish are free, they have a sku code in the computer that they do ring up for free fish.

At that store ive adopted a large catfish (a mis ided pictus that ended up at 8 inches), 2 stunted but over 2 inch tiger barbs, a rosy barb, and a blue gromi. All of those fish could of been sold since they had them all in inventory. So your telling me that they should suddenly start charging and not have it go to a good home?

My mom adopted a cat last month and had to have pictures of her house, name of her vet, list of her pets, square footage of her yard, and was 5 pages of obsucre questions.

If your going by the book then go by the book. Not pick and choose.

From what I hear every Petco isn't the same. Just like every Petsmart isn't the same regarding their return policy. Every Petsmart is under a corporate infrastructure, but still each store for who knows why returns thing differently. It's just how it is when you have hundreds of stores or even thousands.

I don't see a problem with how your mom had to adopt a cat. Most cats up for adoption had a bad past, would you want to get abused by your parents then a seemingly "nice" family adopts you without any background search on them. Then a month later their abusing you too. Adoption groups are there to see that the pets that they just rescued from a pet parent that starved them to nearly death or was living in a trash can outside gets a nice and loving family. Cats and dogs are just like having a kid. Their literally part of the family, why not make sure that they are getting a good home. Just try and think of it in the opposite way. Sure you have to take pics and answer a ton of questions, but you will be getting a friendly loving cat that you SAVED who on averages lives over 10 years.

LFS's take adoptive fish for free and always try to sell them to increase profit. I understand that Petco is a major corporation and you think that they should eat the profit on adoptive fish and do it only for the cause. They do have to house and feed the fish. Most corporate stores won't even handle adoptive fish. If someone wants to to turn a fish into Petsmart, I don't think they could. To the best of my knowledge, Petsmart does not take adoptive fish nor do they take trade-ins. Fortunately, Petco does. That, in itself, is a good cause.

Petsmart:
No trade-ins.
No adoption for fish nor any animals....unless you leave them at the front foor. Has happened quite a few times before, not just fish too.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation.
