"The petco way"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also Dogs & Cats are in a whole different ball game. Some states & more have laws or pending laws on buying, adopting & so on with these Two main pets for most. Fish do not get the attention or addressed like a dog & cat which are more a family pet then everything else.
I use to be a Animal Control officer so I know a thing or two about the laws, requirements etc. related to pets etc..
It maybe easier to provide a uniform care requirment for the dog & cats according to size & breed.
Now fish as anyone on this site should know is vast in size of fish, tank size, feeding etc.. It would be a night mare or crazy to enforce a adopted fish even a gold fish for that matter to meet every requirement needed for ever type of fishes.
Example today, Had a nice lady come in looking for a 2 gallon glass fish bowl. I asked what she had? She had a six year old 6" gold fish in the same size bowl that broke. I was like that fish needs a aquarium with filteration or in a garden/koi pond although it could be stunted being that old. I advised a 10 gallon being a cheap alternitive. But she stated he was doing great this long. So on her way to look for a a glass bowl.

I have & had fish that were less then par or had a missing eye or fin but other then that they were healthy & did not have the hart to flush or feed to something that is always hungry here so I basically will charge a couple bucks or so to conver a little of the labor & the packinig etc.. So basically I lose money because the fish was a $10-$30 or whatever fish but at least it would be going to a better home then a ten gallon here plus I free up a tank to bring in something new.

From what I hear every Petco isn't the same. Just like every Petsmart isn't the same regarding their return policy. Every Petsmart is under a corporate infrastructure, but still each store for who knows why returns thing differently. It's just how it is when you have hundreds of stores or even thousands.

You work at a Petsmart? I do in the petcare department and my store has a 14 day return policy on all pets, which i think is bull****. We get idiot people coming in all the time thinking they can put cichlids in a goldfish bowl, and they bring the fish in 3 days later wanting to get their money back saying our fish suck.

We also don't take in any animals, what so ever.

This thread was an interesting read, the only pets we adopt away for free are the small animals in the sick room. Most of them aren't even sick, most of them just got attacked by the bigger badder hamster or one eye may be smaller than the other.

Yes I work there. Lead stock, it's fun now that I'm PT once again and not worrying about every meticulous thing in receiving.

The fish I'm not too worried about. Yes I care about them and I keep fish myself but it's not too bad at my store. Just depends, during the holidays people buy fish for their kids and that's when it can get bad. What I think is bad is when you sell a winter white (hamster incase anyone doesn't know) for example and you tell tell the pet parent that they need to settle down in their new homes as in don't let your little kids be poking and picking the hamster up every 6 minutes. Then it gets mean after a week and gets returned because it was biting their children. Then it attacks the other hamsters now and have to be isolated which makes it even worse. Luckily my GF is a hamster extrodinaire and adopts everyone they need adopted out. We have 4. :) :)

I am new to MFK and I started out going to my small, local fish supplier for advice supplies etc....they are very nice but kept giving me some type of chemical everytime I came in the store....went to Petco down the street and he has been steering me into a more natural non-chemical approach to my tank parameters and maintenance etc.....so I guess it depends on the experience and knowledge of the staff...coporate or non-corporate....Shout out to Terry @ Petco!!! ~my piranhas and I thank you:)

Totally agree with you on that one. People don't do their homework before they buy. Or they ask you a question and you tell them something but they don't listen anyways

The two petcos in my area are horrible, one of them actually stopped selling fish and got rid of their fish and reptile department because of all the deaths that were happening.
