The pool filter sand thread!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My test tank looks pretty good. I just have to be sure I like the color. I'm going to try putting a tank light over it. I'm very pleased with how heavy it is though

My test tank cleared up and the sand looks great. I'm rrreeaaalllyyy debating about putting it in my 125. But then I'm going against why I got my tiny gravel [being scared of sand and my FX5] Although it appears to be much heavier.

Like I said earlier I don't have issues with the sand and my FX5. I get a little bit in there each month that I clean out when I do my monthly filter maintenance. Every 6 months or so I pull the motor off to clean the impeller but that is about it. My Oscars like to throw the sand into the filters I swear. The one I have no issue with is my XP4 since the impeller is on the top and thus the sand is at the bottom causing no issues.

This is the stuff I used. Bought it at my local pool supply place. $10 per 50lb bag. I run 2 FX5s with one of the intakes about 3" off the bottom and have had no problems at all. This stuff settles very quickly if stirred up.

No doubt PFS is great. I have used it in two tanks and I love it. Only used white though. Anyone find grey or black sand anywhere?

Those tanks look great guys. And might be some encouragement since my FX5 intake is about half way up the back. Sooo 12" from the sand? haha.

I got my 125 to bare bottom today. Debating if I want to do the PFS lol. I'm checking out american sale tomorrow because i heard their sand is a bit browner than the stuff I bought.
