bought him from petsmart 6 months ago, he's about 5-6" now. This thing ****'s more than me. I love his pattern but he's going to the fish store as soon as I have time. I've had dozens of common plecos whom of which are all semi-messy but this thing is just disgusting. He makes more poop than anything I've ever kept (even common plecos 3x his size.) I can't even describe the havoc he's wrecked on my tanks. I hate trading fish in but this thing has to go. Anybody care to tell me what he is? Also, has anybody ever had a "poopy" fish like this? I'd like to keep him but he's ruining every tank I put him in.

thats a very nice pleco. ive had bad experiences with pooping plecos too. all of the ones ive had poop more than they clean. in my flowerhorn tanks i dont have one. i dont have one in my cray tank either

I didn't buy him to clean algae, I know how much plecos poop but this thing is off the charts..

I don't understand.. I've kept many large plecos up to 18" that don't make as big of a mess as this guy. He will literally cover a 55gallon tank by himself in less than a day. It's disgusting. I don't feed the tank he's in often either but he tends to be in tanks with lots of driftwood. Is the driftwood in his diet causing this? I keep shuffling him around.. The picture I took of him is after I had just moved him to my 110 bare bottom tank with a sump and overflow, hopefully it takes care of his messes so I can keep him.

fast metabolism? :D

if you think that ones bad try 3 6" and 3 3.5" royals =P
i run 2 AC110's 1 100 gallon pump with sponger filter and a 80 gallon powerhead and it still cant clean it up

That's a really nice fish, not a common pleco, it's a Hypostomus species, you can tell by the lower number of dorsal rays. But what species would be hard to pinpoint exactly without a capture location, these come up much less often than they used to so I'd keep hold of it if I were you, beautiful pattern on the dorsal.

Actually I have an L-24 L-25 and an L-114/ These are all in the pseudocanthicus family and are carnivores, Which eat mostly a meaty diet. The pic of yours is a herbivore. Eats mostly vegetation. My L-25 is 8 inches and really doesn't mess much. Then again my plecos will not eat any vegetation other than what algae meal is mixed in Ocean Nutrtion flakes which is thier primary diet. Commons can be extrmely messy because of the vegetarian diet.

i think he is a great addition to your collection...and looks good right where he is ...the pooper or not... :D
