Why do you need a heater when in the wild the temp changes all the time? As long as your within a reasonable temp your ok right?

I have a heater and I will continue to use it, I was just wondering why you need one, thanks.

The temperature ranges that are recommended are based on the averages of where they come from. Keep in mind, your talking about 100 gallon tank compared to 100's of thousands of gallons in the wild which means less temperature fluctuation despite different air temperatures.

So, what is the average temp where BP's come from? ;)

We use to just keep the appartment at 72... was cheaper then running heaters in alll our tanks.. and heating was included in our rent to boot....

I guess if you had consistent temps all year round you wouldn't need a heater. You could just buy a heater like the acqueon that shuts off automatically when it's at the set temperature, then it would only go on if necessary to save you money, and maybe your fish.
