The Purpose Of A Heater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Heaters are needed for the high temp changes in our tanks.

So what's the deal with them recommending temps like 70-78? Is it a scam to get you to buy ick med's for your fish?

Them meaning- books, websites, etc,

I haven't used Ick medication in almost 10 yrs? sometimes high temps work.. sometimes they don't. not to mention i think 1 tank i have has fish that aren't sensitive to copper medication. just like too low your fish will get sick, too high and they will get sick. the warmer water is, the less dissolved O2 it holds.. some fish do better then others with this... and some not at all ( NA natives like perch, walleye would perish in higher temps and often need chillers on their tanks to thrive in captivity) 68-78 is a "General" accepted ideal... African cichlids generally do better on the higher side, SA/CA cichlids seem to do better on the lower side... and depending where the fishes native water system and where they are found can all play a role. useing humans as reference isn't great... maybe reptiles are a better example... Pythons survive in the lower states because of temps alone, unlike NA native reptiles most who hibernate. Their designed top to bottom to live in a certain geographical sections... cold-blooded is an evolutionary road block. some species have adapted.. but threw evolution/adaptation... not just acclimation.

the purpose of a heater is to convert one type of energy into heat energy.

Are heaters a scam like carbon?

carbon isn't a scam, it's a filtration media.
don't blame someone else for your inability to do your own research. after all, if you don't verify the data, you're only doing what the gullible fool before you did, which would make you the next gullible fool in line. just because you don't need it all the time, doesn't mean it can't be a useful tool.

like the fact that you are assuming temps everywhere are the same as your temps. not all fish will need a heater. tropical fish in non-tropical areas do. species from your general area usually won't. species from cooler climates than yours will need a chiller. living near larger water mass complicates the issue.
I'd love to keep a burbot, they live in the lakes around my state, but it will never happen because the temps are too cold where they live, even though it's only 40-50 miles away from me.
they stay down in the bottoms of the lakes where the temps are around 50 degrees.

If you live in the tropics or raise temperate fish, then yes, heaters are scams like carbon is a scam if you want bio filtration. I can tell you from first hand experience though that your tropical fish will die if in the mist of winter your heater breaks the same way that if you want to take out some chemicals or smell from the water, carbon is the way to go.

to maintain an 80 degree tank without a heater you would nees ambient temps of about 82. a lily hotter than i keep my thermostat

How is carbon a scam? It does what it's supposed to do, like someone stated just because you don't use it all the time doesn't mean that its not a useful tool.
