Answer your question, no you don't NEED a heater, but I doubt you can keep your room at 82-84 degrees all the time.

No, many tropical species will get sick just like we do when exposed long term to cold climate.. Ick parasite is questionably in most fish tanks.. compromised immune systems will often give the parasite the foothold it needs... High temps keep it at bay, and can kill certain strains.

I doubt it. The fish can survive in it, but there's always an ideal temp. We can survive in 30 degree weather but do we prefer it? And how long could we survive it?
