The Rapps Orino thread!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine were interested in frozen but didn't seem to eat a whole lot of it, I tried frozen brine, they weren't crazy about it, tried bloodworms and they were a little more interested, threw in some small guppies and they were in heaven. I didn't want to go the live route but I wanted them to have something in their stomachs. I'm headed over to the house today after my new Cichla arrive  with salt to throw in the tank, is rule of thumb 1 TBSP per gallon?

1tblspn per gallon seems like a lot. My box says 1tblspn/5gals. Is this why its not working as well?

Not sure to be honest with you as far as amount goes, I didn't have any measuring devices so I tried to ball park how much to add. Some of the ich has gone away on a couple but its still there on I think 3 of them visibly. I'm pretty nervous, they don't have clamped fins and don't seem to be acting too bad off but you never know. I'll be glad when this ich outbreak is over!

same here

I wanted to make a post to let you all know that I am now aware of the slight ick that has been noticed on some orders of orinos received in shipments later this week.

I assure you that I would not pack fish with visible signs of any ick.

I've been in business for far too long and deal with far too many good people to think I can 'get one over' on a customer with something as simple as saying 'not my problem...'

Does my track record over the past 13-14 years say otherwise?
I'm sorry if anyone feels like their opinion doesn't count or that I don't take each and every order seriously.
Of course I do!
I spend a great deal of time communicating via phone and email with customers and potential customers.
You folks have no idea how many fish I've talked people out of buying from me due to compatibility issues, etc.

I most certainly do not have $ signs in my eyes.
I'm in for the long run.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A vendor cannot count on making money from each and every order processed. It's a shame not every vendor can step back and view their business from that perspective, but please be assured that I have known this for a very long time.

I noticed that several of you commented on this individual's post that appears below.
I'd like comment to as well.

they werent doa but all ten died within 5 hours of recipt needless to say im pissed

First of all, I was very sorry to hear about any losses.
What is missing from the post, however, is some additional info I received on an email stating that the fish were medicated-and then lost.

I hate to have to lay it out, but the Rid-Ick that I am told was added to the tank is downright deadly to many fish (most definately including Cichla of all sizes!).

The formaldehyde and malachite green combo that is in that medication, while effective in irradicating the ick, are also effective irradicators of little Cichla.

I know the manufacturers directions state that the product is safe with even scaleless fish, but that's not entirely accurate.

If you are going to medicate Cichla, NEVER use full strength of any meds or salts - and never use copper while I'm on the subject.

Best bet is to go with raised temps and 33% to 50% dose strength - or rapid losses such as that which occurred in this individual's tank are a likely result.

I will admit to over-medicating thousands of fish over the years. We tend to learn these things the hard way. I can only hope that I've learned from my mistakes.

So in spite of this individual's fish being lost so suddenly after the addition of the med, I still replied with an offer to help out towards a future order.

I am not oblivious to each and every customers' comments and needs.
I am not a fish bank with an endless supply of fish to offer as replacements. By the same token, as I stated earlier, I'm in this business for the long haul.

If I need to take a beating on one person's order and replace fish to maintain the highest level of customer relations as I possibly can, then that is what I will do and will continue to do.

How much salt do YOU recommend to add?

orinos still have visible ich but they all appear to be doing good for now. got the water at about 86-87 and adding salt, 1tbsp per 5g. what is everybody else doing? i hope these guys can pull thru

just received this info from jeff via email. worth a try :)

I make a formalin and pure malachite crystal mix that I treat my 1000-2500 gal central systems, but I never keep my Cichla on central system and I never use those meds on my Cichla.

I've had great success over the years using Jungle Ick Guard on individually medicated tanks.
For Cichla, I use 50% dose and change water daily (which I do on these bass already).

Temps are upper 80's and they are pigging out on frozen bloodworms and pureed raw shrimp 2-3 times per day.
I've seen marked growth and triple intake on food per day from all the orinos I have over this past week Jose.

I trust all will be well with the fish once settled in and ick is behind them.
