3 for 1 sale on "wild caught" labiatus - well that certainly wouldn't cause a red flag to go up. :)

lol. Especially since they're 1" in size with no discernible differences from every other juvenile Amph in the hobby. Yikes....

No one said that owning WC fish is so important, but it was the term that you (incorrectly) used in this discussion that was important to some of us. Hopefully you learned a thing or two along the way.

Cheers

I was only using what the store tag said so yes I used it correctly. Yes I learned people can get anal about the most insignificant crap. Cheers. 3 for one isn't a bad idea, no one would pay much for f1 rd's anyway (other than a handful of us) since to most people they are as common as convicts (in their eyes). Only a few people actually care. That's why I was so curious. ALSO I have never seen anything labeled as a red devil with that grey color I guess for some red devils are normally grey? Usually here they are red or orange. IF I showed 100 people these fish no one is going to think they are red devils or midas. I Bet most LFS wouldn't even. Hell I bet if I never told anyone what they were sold as people here wouldn't even know. Probably think they are firemouth or trimacs lol

So using your logic, if the store labeled them as peacock bass, then you would be correct in doing likewise? A classic example of how some people just can't own their own mistakes/ignorance.

When I read your initial comment I assumed that we were dealing with a 13 yr old kid (give or take) that has never seen a real anything, beyond what's sold at their local chain store. You continue to display your lack of knowledge surrounding this subject by still not taking the time to research the natural color morph of ALL juvenile amphs - not the ones farmed in Florida, or Asia, that have been chosen for color over many generations of selective breeding. In the wild, little baby orange/red fish would be gobbled up whole by every predator in the environment, including fish, birds, mammals, etc.

And if as you now say this is such insignificant crap, then why start this topic in the first place? Some of us actually care, because we are attempting to hopefully one day see some of these species (in a pure state) become a lot more common in the hobby. If it wasn't for vendors like Jeff Rapps importing some of these fish from their native waters, the only thing that most people here would have in their tanks would be hybrid crosses of labs x cits. That, or one would have to fly to CA and collect their own, which for most hobbyists isn't possible.

Hell I bet if I never told anyone what they were sold as people here wouldn't even know. Probably think they are firemouth or trimacs lol

The members here know a hell of a lot more than you realize.

the store was not miss labeling a species so your peacock bass logic is just wrong, IF they said wild caught peacock pass then mentioning that you got a wILD CAUGHT peacock bass would be correct. We still don't know what they really are. you still cannot prove they are not wild caught. I don't think they are personally anymore nor do I care I am more curious to see how they turn out. I did not expect someone to get butthurt over a 5 dollar fish they wish to see after 20 years in the hobby?

Yes you are right I am new to the hobby but I did not expect such anal responses over nothing. I join because I hope that there are experienced people with actual knowledge (not you) out here that can help out with stuff since I haven't been in it long.

I am sure there are thousands of 100 year old men like yourself out there that would not know what the species is if they encountered it and would post to see what they really are.

The threadwas turned around into garbage because you kept going off topic of them being wild caught rather than f1. I just wanted to know what they were and not a single person even took a look to see if they resemble f1 red devils even. I didn't expect people to get bent out of shape (mostly you) over a fish that has been imported here many many times (according to jeff rapps). I sent him an e mail and he said they don't seem wild caught but look like rd's.

I guess your pension cant afford the price of importing and trying to breed and sell to vendors the way jeff rapps does but I am sure with your anal personality you will not have many buyers. lol.WOW . What a waste of time I am done with the thread. Cheers.

oh just one last thing this fish will NEVER be common in the hobby pure f1 strains that is because vendors do not want them, so keep living your sad pointless dream. I have already spoken to a few vendors and no one wants them when full grown they are too aggressive and get to big like Oscars so vendors don't care that much about pure strains. There might be the odd rare vendor that will try but this fish pure will never be common. THe public only cares about color and looks and as long as whatever is out there can provide that, that is what the vendors will buy because they are not going to waste money where there are a billion other cichilds out there that sell better look better (to the public) and value actually goes higher when they grow big. Mine were priced so low because no one probably wanted them. I don't care about their worth in the end I am happy with my purchase because even vendors with actual knowledge have told me they seem like captive bred RD's from the video. LIke Oscars the value of RD gets lower as they grow many places wont take them free. Oscars are even priced higher have a higher worth because they are much less aggressive and people can actually have them with all sorts of fish most of the time.
Cheers :)

Sorry, did I strike a raw nerve? lol

Perhaps a little less of the yapping, and a little more paying attention when members are attempting to HELP you, and you would have already came to the conclusion that at such small sizes, juvenile amphs all look very similar. That, and if/when crossed, no one (including Rapps) can say with any certainty what the exact genetic background of the fish is. A cross can look just as pure as a pure strain. Hence no one on this forum, or any other, would be able to answer your question from simply viewing a photo, or a video. Short of the supplier of your fish adding some provenance to this group of fish, you might as well have bought them at your local Petsmart.

Nothing wrong with that, but they won't be wild caught, nor will they be F1.

Any of this beginning to sink in? There's a couple of stickies on this subject in the CA/SA folder, one of them I already posted a link to. As far as being common in the hobby, almost every fish store in existence that sells freshwater fish, has sold, and/or still sells, "red devils", including all of the big box chain stores, such as the one where you purchased these. Doh! The people that will bring the pure strains back into the hobby are all those people such as the ones that Rapps has sold to across NA, including here in Canada. This is where most seasoned hobbyists purchase their stock, not from the local Big Al's, Petsmart, Petland, etc. In case you haven't noticed this isn't ChaiNstoreFishkeeping.com

Good luck with your fish.

Wow! Lol Mr. Candid I have been following this thread and I have to Agree with RD that you are not listening and there is some good info here.

I am a Hobbyist in the Toronto area. The LFS are not to be believed and the employees don't know about all the fish they manage. Take it from me that they are not F1 nor Wild and Not Labiatus!

No one knows what they are so this make them Midas/red devil....... That's it,final.
no point asking anymore or wondering if they look more like such and such.

So now you can call them "my Midas/Red Devil"
