The reckoning

Ya I'm dropping the temp slowly but also waiting for my new rays tail to heal up. You would have thought he would be happy in a tank 2-4 times the size he has ever seen. I feed a mix of foods. Not sure what is the cheapest rather then talapia at this point. I have been working on getting all the rays onto pellets so feeds only massivore and 6mm NLS right now.

I'm next going looking for a good local Asian market. But shrimp at 6.99 a pound right by my house already pealed and de tailed is super nice. I just buy 2 days worth to keep it fresh. Other shrimp here just went up in price at the other place I was buying to 8.50 per pound.

Yeah, I just buy what's on sale. The cheapest I got was $4 a pound, medium shrimp, shells still on, not even cut for easy peeling, which would be a huge PITA........ if I was eating them.......

The fish don't care and some folks say the shells are nutritious.

That's a good thought. I have seen prawns/ shrimp here for about 5.00 with shell on if I buy in bulk. Might ask and see if ray people feed with shell on.

To be clear, I cut the tail off with scissors. I heard the tail has a spine or something that could hurt the guts of a fresh water fish? For me the tail was just going to pass anyway and I would have to clean it out of the filters later LOL Removing it first was the simplest option.

Oh I feed everything and anything from worms to shrimp, fish, pellets 3 different types. Couple of them eat like pigs the other couple are not real aggressive eating. But I can feed a pound of shrimp easy and still throw another pound in and see it go fast. With 8 rays and 23 fish in just this tank. That's why I don't feed worms anymore expenses add up fast and they could eat 10-15.00 worth easy.

I did drop the tank temp for the winter just now, Its at about 79, it was at 82 because I was waiting on a tail of a ray to heal up a touch more as it was nipped, I already drip a good amount into the tank, anything below 80 is good to me. With rays it just seems that most tanks are always at 80 or above and anything below that is great. I think for it to be at 20 I would have to drip 10 gallons per hour or more. So currently I am happy with it, even though I have not tested it for a while. Over all humidity has gone down allot now with just 2+ degrees difference.

what temp do you keep the tank at. perhaps lower it a degree or 2 to help with humidity. also drip a lil higher gph to get those nitrates to around 20ppm or so.

nice read. loved how the tank looked when you first set it up with all the decor and fish in it. thought to myself man i would like to have a "fish" tank up again cause they just look good, but just like you found out decor to a min. floor to the max with a ray tank. not sure if i will ever go back to the regular fish again. as those rays get bigger i think those fish will slowly disappear. they can live together for a long time then all of the sudden one will get a taste for them and start the hunting.

as far as temp i keep mine anywhere from 77-80 and for feeding shrimp i also go shell on.
