Hello monster fish keepers. I've had a Red Devil Cichlid for exactly 31 days! His name is Jamin. I was wondering, is he a A. labiatus or A. citrinellus? He's really grown his body out (a full inch) and he looks stockier than when I first got him. I would love it if he is a true Red Devil! Apparently breeders often mistake one species for the other, resulting in hybrids. I personally love the design of A. labiatus, as it's sleeker than citrinellus's build. I look forward to the many years I get to spend with him! Lastly, can he eat blueberries, strawberriers, or any human fruits/veggies that aren't listed as cichlid diet suggestions/requirements on standard fish sites? Pix are from today. Tank setup: 75 US gal, 1 heater, 1 large aqueon bubbler, Penguin bio-wheel 350 power filter, gravel, 10 plants, and 1 Amphilophus sp. Jamin's diet:
Pineapple, lettuce (just now), mango, crickets, bloodworms (favorite food), oranges, cichlid pellets, rarely cichlid flakes, algae wafers, krill, and King Crab (for Christmas). That list will grow as he does! Thanks for any helpful info, or info in general.

Welcome aboard

Whatever he truly is it is a very good looking Cichlid. The mods will hopefully move this to the Cichlid forum.

Good looking fish, unfortunately there is no real way to tell unless you buy it from a reputable vendor who you trust. From fish stores, some may be pure, but most are considered to be hybrid midas/rd's. They are so similar that it doesn't matter much, I wouldn't let it bother you.

As above, for what it's worth he strongly leans more towards rd imho.
Watch some of skips videos on YouTube, he does a really in depth video on Midas and rd difference.
It's best to sell an future fry as midevil to be safe unless you buy them off a reputable source like rapps or cota.

Thanks guys! I actually got him from a fish-exclusive pet store here in Phoenix, it's called the Ocean Floor Store. They have a mighty collection of awesome fish, like baby Arowanas! If only I could find the Reed Fish again...

The name name red devil, is a generic term for any almost solidly colored pink/red member of the Amphilophus group. Could be any of about a dozen species, because they "all" have the ability to produce that color morph.
If you got it from a LFS (unless it was special order, from someone like Jeff Rapps) it is probably a mid-evil/red devil, because until recently no-one knew the extent of species radiation, and inadvertently cross bred them all (and still do).
There is no way to tell just by looking.
