Not really, but IDK i've never seen an injury turn the color of their skin red, I'll just give it a week and we will see if it goes away.

A catfish (any fish) can injure its tail by continually brushing it against a hard surface. You may have seen it on a fish kept in a tank that is too small or on a fish left in a metal fishing basket too long. Such an injury can cause a blood red looking, damaged tail. I am not telling you this is the case, but it could be the case. Cool fish though and I commend you for taking an unwanted pet. Should be a great acquisition.

Huh never knew that. Thanks. :)

Thanks all, I'm glad I helped him out. If it's an RTC(not totally convinced that it's not until the red goes away on it's tail) then great a true monster and if it's a bullhead well then I feel special(lol) because I don't know of many who has one. :) I'll keep you all updated on how he's acting.

Also though what kind of salt shoudl I use on him, just the normal aquarium salt found at a LFS? And anyone have some basic info on a bullhead catfish. They probaly will eat shrimp and massivore or something but what's an ideal temp for him. He's at 78 now. Thanks.

the red could be caused by burst blood vessels, but i think thats what loganh was saying.
sometimes it just goes, sometimes its a sign of something worse, either way the salt and heat should work.:D
hope it all goes well, looks lovely.

I hope he heals for you...

there is no question that it is a bullhead. doesnt look anything like a rtc or an artc for that matter. 78 is very warm since the bullhead is a native north american cold water species. try posting pics of it in the native section there are alot of bullhead keepers on there, or possibly in the outdoor pond section, there are alot of members with bullheads in there non heated outdoor ponds.

just a side note they are a VERY hearty species and should have no problem healing up, just minimize stress, and keep water params in check, the high temp may also help him heal but i wouldnt go any higher than that.
