So I see a lot of people asking questions along the lines of "can someone explain to me how to make a sump" I am a firm believer that the best way of doing that is for the individual to research and learn HOW and WHY rather than just being told what to do. There are many great sump designs and a whole lot of knowledge on this forum, and I think it would be a great resource if we could pool that knowledge and make a sort of catalogue of different peoples sump designs, so every time someone asks that question they can be directed here to do their research.

It would be good if posts could follow a similar format to provide a bit of basic information about the system, and also include a link to another thread where people can ask specific questions about an individuals design so that this thread remains more like a catalogue and isn't cluttered with pages and pages of Q&A. And hopefully if it gets enough info it can be stickied here so it is easy to find! I know we already have the "DIY Filter Compilation" thread, and no disrespect to WyldFya but half a dozen links isn't much of a compilation. There are so many interesting and different sump set-ups here so we should be able to build this into a very good resource specifically on sumps. I'm not really sure how many Salties we have on here, but maybe for simplicities sake we should keep it to fresh-water set ups for now.

And just to repeat it once more, this is NOT a discussion thread. If you have questions about someone's design follow the link in their post or send them a PM to ask it.

Sound good? Go!

Here's my current set up:

System Volume: ~2200L/580g
Stocking: light-moderate
Sump Dimensions: 220x50x60cm
Pump: Laguna MaxFlo 11000 (2900)
Plumbing and Head Height: 2 50mm/2" drains Herbie-style, 40mm return plumbing, ~100cm head
Estimated Flow/Turn-over: 8500-9000LPH, ~4x turn-over
Mechanical Media: 80cm long Settling Chamber, 1 10ppi, 2 20ppi and 1 30ppi 50x50cm sheets of Poret Foam
Biological Media: 20L Pond Matrix, 5L ceramic rings, 10L Bioballs
Any other filtration: Pothos
Notes/Other Info: The settling chamber is still a bit of an experiment but seems fairly effective for catching heavy waste like the sawdust my Panaques make, it would work better if the flow was a bit slower, I'm hoping the Pothos roots will eventually helo slow the flor and catch more of the waste. There is a drain in the end compartment at the water level that can be opened for easy water changes.

Sevan, can we. Can we get a drawing or a better look at how your sump is set up?? And +1 on how you clean it? Or do you? Are you using a sock and if so, how many times a week are you cleaning or replacing it?

I don't clean the media. If you have a good mechanical the bio should be free of waste. It's recently set up so its not that dirty yet. IF it does get dirty, I'll just have to take it out and rinse it in tank water I guess lol. I have 1 filter sock that I change daily by choice so I don't harbor waste and possibly let waste get trapped in the bio. It seems like a lot of work but it's not if your have a bunch is filter socks. It takes 30sec to replace the sock itself. After you've had 4-5 dirty socks, throw it into the washing machine with a bit of bleach and repeat. uploadfromtaptalk1377356252303.jpg

I love it! Pretty much a bare sump and lots of bio filtration! I'm in the process of adding pothos to my tank. I'm regrowing some right now waiting for it to root. My mother has those things growing like crazy all over her house, a true pothos jungle! so I snipped some and put it in a vase with some fresh tank water everyday. If it all works, and my plan with my sump, its pretty much going to be the same as yours. I'm going to be using Bio home + as my bio filter!

Yup, keep it simple. I'll be building another sump for my bigger tank. From there's I'll have almost the same set up but instead of lava rocks I'll use pond matrix. I have a 120gal FGT 36"x36"x20" for the sump. This will be for a 1020gal tank.uploadfromtaptalk1377381477188.jpg
