The tale of the 240...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Black belts are definately more aggressive. They aren't zons though, definately synspillum...great fish! At that size, the fact they are showing so much color is awesome! Definately keep them!!!

If you DO order from Rapps, get some of his shinespot synspilum, and some zonatus...GOTTA get the zonatus! ;)

I bought these 3 as syns. Are they zonatus? Cool if they are. Black belts are a bad idea then. Thanks Taz.

they're rather dark to tell a difference to me but with the pink face I'd say Syns. I was going by you saying you like the Zons, that's why I thats what they were.

LFS still have some and they're lighter than your pics but the pinks do have the same markings as yours.

Yeah, dont get black belts. you could try the Chuco Godmani. Or the Zons if ya still can.

Rob,

Gani started his 360g vieja community tank after he saw my over-stocked tank. All his vieja collection except a few originally came from me. He pretty much has all types of vieja's in there and aggression spreads out among them.

For your 240g, I would get at least six or more vieja's, preferably, one male each from different type. I used to have all male vieja's in my tank and that combination worked well. Here is a stock list that I used have in my 240g: one argentea, one blackbelt, one pink bifa, one rio-chacamax bifa, one hartwegi, one regani, one fenestrata, one cuban, one pearsei, one bicourti and one synspilum. They were all big fish ranged from 8" to 14". The blackbelt was the most dominant fish and followed by the hartwegi and cuban.

Also, you have to becareful when buying vieja's from LFS because you might end up with hybrids.

Well, good luck with your new setup. :)

Thanks for the motivation gary.

OK fellas, got hit with some bad mojo yesterday, like 5 grand of bad mojo, so it dont look like Ima be getting any shipped pikes anytime soon. ( Sorta feeling like salty if you know what Im layin down). Im gonna get this bitc# runnin as soon as I do an acrylic makeover, but its gonna be probably pikeless for at least a couple months. Now I dont mean litterally pike;ess, I always have a few random svenis layin around, but I dont even want to go there. All my earnings are gonna be going to bills and ridding me of this little black cloud of 5 large. Ill still drop a few bucks into it but for now Im gonna break down a couple 60s for the substrate, plants and lighting, and go from there. I promise to keep this story exciting though. I mean cmon, look whos spinning it. At least yall will be laughing at my mishaps that always happen.

damn, sorry to hear about the 5 grand punch in the testies bro. Yo, rob, seriously, I think my Fires are going to get it crackin soon, they wont leave each others side at all and are now guarding a large territory in my tank together. They are only about 5 inches at the most i think right now, but from the looks of it, i think they are a pair, either that or they are two males that happen to really like each other, but im not going for that **** in my tank. hahaha. Anyway, back to where I was going with this, if they do have some little pikeletts, your welcome to as many as you want bro, no charge, just come and get'em. I'll keep you posted on that though. Oh, I have pic's of them, but they are the crappiest pictures in the world, seriously, my hand is not very steady when im taking pics with an already crappy black berry phone camera. But I have them, don't know how to reformat the pic's to upload them into the right file on my computer at work to then transfer them on the site though. I can shoot you can e-mail if you wanna see them, or what you can of them.

Sorry to hear Rob. I got smashed for 3 stacks last week so I know how you feel. I bought a 220 that I am keeping under wraps right now and I cant move accordingly due to the low blow. There is a brighter day comming. If you have a few dollars free play the mega millions its up to 300+ mil now.

dang, how'd i miss this thread?? i need to check out the pike section!
sorry to hear about what happened, rob i'm sure things will work out ok in the end. but hey i guess this means those current little residents will get large in that space in time, huh?
keep us in the loop on what's happening. i love these big tank stories

sorry to hear it bro on the bright side at least you have a few pikes. what acrylic finishing kit are you going with? i used one from micro surface worked really good but alot of work (like 50 hrs on mine and its not perfect) if i had to do it again i would use the one for power tools. just a heads up. good luck with your situation
