get a stock tank, the ones that you water cattle with. They come in polyurethane or whatever is spelled. Very cheap, a 9 ft diameter one at 2+ ft deep is around 200 bucks.

Much cheaper than a tank.

If you want larger sized ones like 16 ft diameter and 4 ft deep, there is a place that makes them :)
id be looking for something a bit more formal. but still a possibility

and p.s. with the growth rate of a rtc, it wouldnt be a needle in a haystack for long.

exactly ,, i would be happy with this like i said ,, so upgrading would be fun for me ,,my rtc home comes in three stages ,, i think that is a very fair way to do it,,

others might want to go huge straight away ,, and some like to pay as you go,,,

i like the pay as you go ,, not because funds restrict me ,, more that i prefer to tinker with stuff and go shopping at the lfs ,,

i just dont see the point of putting a 3 inch fish in a 1000gallon ,,,

not 3 inch for long you will say ,, all this considered i would put a 3 inch rtc in a home that would last him a couple of years ,(according to backed reasearch), not his full 20 years ,,,

then depending on the growth rate,, (i dont want anyone to quote growth rates to me unless they have a 20 year old rtc that they have had since 3 inch to back up their claim) will depend on if i upgrade sooner or later,,

as much as i do enjoy, as well as we all do, setting up a new tank, i would much rather start with a big tank to optimize growth, rather than buy many sets of progressivley larger tanks then eventually buy this tank.

polish, ive seen many RTC's get very large, and if i do set up this tank, it would be a good possibility once it hit the 3 foot range that i would be setting up a pond, similar to necrocanis's tank size. plus, i could then change tank schemes if i wished, as well as providing a new home, or possibly growing out another baby RTC or hybrid.

That is a good plan, a single upgrade would be pretty ideal especially like you said you could use the original tank as a growout again.

I also think people forget it does stress fish to move them, so having the fish in it's life tank straight away is good. Or in one tank for a few years then a single move. I moved my old RTC at 18" and it wasn't fun, they are powerful dangerous fish. The spines could seriously damage you if you're not careful. In the end it is up to each individual though and what they feel is adequate.

by then ill hopefully have a better means to moving the fish, if to a pond

Agree with polish. Too many re-location is stressfull for both (owner and the kittie). Moving a RTC that outgrew 7' tank is not fun. I moved my RTCs one time only. 7'x2' into 10'x6.7' (footprint). They don't seem to grow very fast after being moved into a large set-up. TL's RTC are mighty fat but they are hardly 5' or 6' beast. I recon it would take some time to get to that length.

10'x4' footprint aquarium would last a long LONG time for RTC - though unfortunately not for life
