Just wanted to be apart of this lounge :)
I am currently getting my teachers degree in arts & design from the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Will graduate this spring.
Got a BA in Architecture before i decided to try this route. Will be certified to teach both primary and secondary schools.
Will of course try to set up a fish tank when i start working as a teacher :D

Great to have you! Sometimes it takes a while to find your calling - I got my first degree in Forestry, went to plumbing school, got my bachelor's degree in Spanish Lit, and then finally went back to get my master's in teaching.

Iceland seems like it would be a great place to live, I've been wanting to visit there for years, but haven't made it yet.

How's the fish availability? Any restrictions? You could have a geothermal heated tropical pond!

no restrictions but fish (and everything else) are pretty expensive over here compared to the US. The availability is all right considering only 300.000 people live here, the stores always get some monsters every now and then :) Only ~4-5 pet stores in the country that import fish, and there are no fish-only stores.

Well, this thread has inspired me to try another fish tank in my classroom. I am dealing right now on a 180g plywood tank, stand, lights, lids and heater for $300. This is going to be great! I think it should prove to be quite popular and motivating to my high school classes. I may have to make a lockable hood to keep the soda pop cans out of the water!

bottom line is the kids are great but the politics-suck-damn
i can not even type-so you want to be a teacher-what grade?

Ok, just set up a 55 in my new classroom (finally got moved out of broom closet). The kids love the tank. I have an oscar a couple of sunfish and a yellow cat in there now. Soon i will make it a pure native, except for the yelllow cat). I have an idea for when my kids start studying the enviornment. For the section on polution, i want to pollute the tank. Just throw in a couple clean soda cans, a shoe maybe, plastc bag. Then I would get the reaction from the kids as they came into the room. What do you all think??

I think that would be an awesome idea. In the beginning I would pretend not to be a part of it and see how the class reacts to this "vandalism" and see where the discussion leads to...

man this thread has exploded! i posted earlier in it about contemplating teaching. im finishing up my BS in biology in the fall, i have to come back to take one class i couldn't get this semester. i am going to apply for the MAT program for secondary biology education. so this semester i decided to take an introductory teaching class. so far its pretty cool. im stoked because we have to class room observation and spend 15hours in a school. im doing a local high school. im not sure what kind of science class it's going to be yet.
