The 'True' Green Terror thread...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, I have some pictures in other threads, but I'll post here too for anyone who missed.

This is Andy, my biggest of the two and I'm assuming male. Any input?

Sorry for the poor pictures. Using a zoom lense and a high ISO, combined with a fish that wont stay still is an awful combination.

View attachment 790266View attachment 790265View attachment 790264sorry best I could do it took 30min to get these. They are still quite skitish. They do have quite a lot of green on their sides already though. Very attractive fish.

Thats exactly how mine looked a month ago! With some clean water and good quality food (which I know you'll give) they grow like weeds and colour up in no time.

Very nice :-) I'm getting some from Rapps on his next shipment.
Good luck with those babies. I look forward to updates.

I look forward to seeing another MFKer on the stally wagon... :D

Got a pair from Jeff a couple weeks back. Still too small to sex, however they are coloring up well, and the white is starting to show on their dorsal fins.
Very very active little buggers, all over the tank, eating whatever I give them (took to hikari pellets the first day!)
My gf and I enjoy watching them heard the tiger barbs around the tank like sheepdogs.

I feel for ya Trace, Almost impossible to get a shot of them holding still :)

Mine like to herd cories and SD's. Its certainly fun to watch :). I expect some pictures :).

My lfs just ordered me two, hopefully I will join the club if all goes well lol

From DJ/MC Decker

I look forward to seeing them. I'm sure you'll be in the club soon ;).

Just got mine from Rapps a couple of weeks ago also. I am real happy with it, although he seems to be pretty aggressive around the other new fish I hope it does not grow up to kill everything, haha. Here are some pics

This has been posted before but just to reaferm the importance of using Latin names when refering to fish and how the use of common names becomes confusing. What is a "True Green Terror"? Green Terror is a common name given to a group of acara type fish so there is no such thing as a true green terror. A. rivulatus, A. aequinoctialis, A. stalsbergi all "green terrors" when grouped in common parlance none more of a "true" green terror than the other, You could say this is a true A. stalsbergi.

One of my favorite, I have brought two pair from Jeff at different times, and they all ended up dying... I am not sure what happened, they were in a community tank and no other cichlid died... I had them for about a month or two and they ended up dead, no marks on them or nothing, hmm... I just gave up on trying to raise them, however, I must say, they are beautiful cichlids :)

Nice cichlids that are being posted, should be fun to watch them grow and show the beautiful colors :)

I thought the Andinoacara aequinoctialis has been renamed recently as Andinoacara sp. Gold/Silver saum. Correct me if I'm wrong?

The reason 'True' is used:
Andinoacara was introduced into the hobby prior to saums, however, they were hard to source and were fairly difficult keep in good shape. So they never really took off for the hobby. Fairly recently (90's) the Saums were introduced and have since become extremely common due to their colours and often ease to keep/breed. These were then labelled as Green Terrors, over the top of the stalsbergi. When the stalsbergi became more common among hobbyists they attemped to differentiate among common names by using 'False' Green Terror (reffering to saums). However, this didn't stick so the stalsbergi was labelled as the 'True' GT, after all it is the more terrorsome and green of the two.

Agreed, It is always best to use latin names though. The common names in this genus are fairly messy.

IMO, 'True' works well. To me there is only the saums and the stalsbergi. So using GT for one and TGT for the other works.

Rivulatus are few and far between if they even exist within the hobby. So they don't really come into it IMO.

Looks good!
There is a lot more darker shades to him/her than mine!? Do you know why?
Just got the one?
They are the most aggressive fish I have ever kept for sure!

I have lost two already from aggro/parasites, but that sounds like a bum deal. I hope mine don't do that. Have you got any pics?

I am surprised by how many people are keeping them. I look forward to comparing as they grow :)

Wow! I've never seen these beautiful fish until today! They're so amazing. I always thought GT's (gold saums) were beautiful, but these true GT's blow them away in my opinion. All I can say is WOW!
