There was a time when you could get a platypus as a pet. But, they don't travel well and many died in transit. Trade in live specimens became banned and even zoos must obtain permission from the Crown to obtain live specimens for their exhibits. Said permission is only given after extensive inspection of the habitat setup.

Thank you! That's what I wanted to hear. Fascinating. I know the curator of the Staten Island Zoo, I'm gonna start bugging him to get some royal permission haha.

Ha ha....he a should have an interesting story to tell.

I will stay with my fishes. They don't stink like a caged animal. I had a lot of pets growing up and found fishes are ideal. You don't have to clean up after them like other animals. Water changes don't require as much work. You can skip a day on feeding and not have to worry as oppose to warm blooded animal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard some where that a platypus has a poison gland and can inject poison with like a nail or something?

But I don't think they could be kept in a fish tank, no matter how big. I'm not an expert, but I watched animal planet a lot back when I was a kid and I believe platypuses need to spend time in land also.

I'm no expert on platypuses, but they would make for an awesome pet. They're so cute tho. I would be tempted to take it out and play with it, being a mammal and all. I don't really know if that's safe.

I did a little bit of reading and it turns out they are venomous, not poisonous. And they do have a stinger on the back of their heels. These little things just keep getting cooler and cooler.

I'm not suggesting anybody keep them in an fish tank, haha. And there's no way you legally could. But all that aside, only the males are venomous. It causes severe pain in humans and might be strong enough to kill a dog or something.

Either way, a platypus would be a freakin sick ass pet! I have relatives in Australia so maybe I should convince them to try and keep one then I can pretend that I have one and live vicariously through them
