The unseen dangers lurking in our tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Damn, this is getting freaky, the dude with the liver abscesses was in India, most case studies do show up in Tropical areas, Africa, India, Asia. It is still quite rare, but for those who haven't read the links people have added, I suggest it. One mother swam in a lake and her fetus became infected. SEVERAL of these are post mortem findings.

I stand corrected, IT CAN also cause septicemia in fish, or other pets as well. Usually it presents in the GI tract.

I just ordered a uv filter, this does kill it. I think there's a lot of luck on many of our parts, but wow, I never knew something this nasty could exist in my tank. My fish were not doing do well last night, I just put on a new Fluval and did a big water change. (I made my bf do the water change!! I'm so mean!!! He didn't have cuts and I chased him around with hospital strength hand germ killer stuff for half the night) The fish are much better and eating fine now. I have tankophobia right now, but my cattle OB gloves are at the vet now waiting plus another MFK member who is a DR. helped me locate 28" rubber gloves with elastic tops. I know I'm changing my methods...........

I really hope everyone reads this!! Being the Guinea Pig sucks, but I'm doing much better, thanks to all of you for you well wishes!

I have to use a rubber to pet my fish? What has this world come to?

To be honest, I've been too sick to really read up on it thoroughly. It seems to originate in the wild, they stated it was rare outside the tropics. It mentioned a few specific species, the ones I mentioned Angels, Black Skirted Tetra's, Blue Gourami (I've had them all) So wild caught. It also said Chinook Salmon and some food fishes, eek. BUT, once the infected fish are placed with other fish, it gets into the GI tracts of all of the species as far as I can tell, so supplier gets it, lfs gets it, we may all have it in our tanks-it's highly possible. That's why I wanted to post it quickly even though I haven't researched it as well as I should have. The 2 links are a little bit helpful, I have more waiting to research, but I'm still pretty sick. I'll update soon when I learn more, I'll try to get it done in the next day or so. It's so hard to research. I had to use a library card to log into an interlibrary database and found some info at John's Hopkin's Univ. medical library.

I think generally, if you have no fresh cuts, you're pretty safe, but I had just finished fixing the chicken coop for the winter and had fresh pokey cuts on my fingers when I came in and cleaned my tank.

I'm shopping for a UV filter as we speak. If anyone locates any more info, please share!!

C'mon, there must be some MD's out there with access to better databases????beg beg

Don't mean to quote the hole thing but you said you had just finished fixing the chicken coop for the winter and had fresh pokey cuts on your fingers when you came in and cleaned your tank.... Did you ever think of Salmanila poisioning???? I work with chickens also and had this before... It is the worst thing ever... I was dead for quite a few day's... Dehydrated and felt like death.... Hospital stay, the hole nine yard's.... I'm not saying you don't have what you just went through, I'm just curious if you thought of that as a possibility?

Well, yeah, I actually do think of that when working around the birds, even with the cats playing with "found" feathers, I even disinfect them first. I usually wear gloves, this was an unexpected glob sticking out from the "****ty" ground, I dug it out when I found it, then even washed up afterwards. BUT it is so easier to get lazy, or just forgetful, I washed my hands quickly, not thoroughly like I should have in retrospect. Did I use the alcohol gel, can't remember. So point of this thread well taken, thank you, it ALWAYS needs to be high on the priority list, eps. with my heart. So you're right, I have considered getting rid of the birds, now I'm half glad the coyotes ate half the population ans they grew, cause any more birds, no way, huh uh too much high nitrogen crap! But they are wild Guinea Fowl, they eat ticks, spiders (tons of Black widows here) they attack or alert on rattlesnakes are are the best squaking guard dogs on earth. A bit stupid is an understatement, but incredible instintive, they just survive on pure instinct. They're cool, I have just 2 now out of 15, but they are both roosters and are hilarious, so I think 2 is the perfect #. There must be a balance in every ecosystem, and even this 100 yr old 200 acre ranch has developed an ecosystem with people, livestock, wild animals, domestic animals, livestock, predators and the wildest animals still in pure untouched wildnerness connected to the ranch. It's amazing. All of it. But thanks for the reminder, point well taken.

My Mom almost died of Salmonella poisoning when I was about 6, living in Saudi Arabia, I remember her in this 3rd world country hospital bed for over a month, now knowing if she'd live or die. It was horrible. She caught it from my turtles, Englebert and Humperdink!
So keepers of birds, reptiles and amphibians also beware of it.

;)Thanks-Mei

glad you made it ok! was a happier dude without this Edwardsiella knowledge...

Wow. I wear gloves just to deal with bloodworms so my hands don't itch. I can't imagine being inflicted with something like that. I had septicemia once and it was quite debilitating.

Glad to see your OK, thanks for sharing this info with us.

This is info every aquarist should know, possibly this is sticky type of thread
