The war on snails.... help?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a snail problem in my lightly planted 55. Bought 3 loaches and after a short while, had to add snails for the loaches to eat. LoL

Interesting definitely checking that out.

Did you get any ammonia spikes with them dying off?
Also, is the copper treatment same for the fish in the tank?

Thanks

yes you will have a huge die out in about 3-4 days. I vacummed gravel and changed water every other day. new water was re dosed with cupramine. follow the directions on the bottle of cupramine as if your medicating the fish. you will need a copper test kit. seachem makes a good one. no carbon in the filters take it out before you dose. fish and plants can tolerate copper.most fish species can handle copper levels up to about 0.8 but catfish and some loaches may not take it at all. at proper levels it don't effect tank cycle at all. BB stays intact. I kept my tank at 0.25ppm copper for a month. will wipe out the snails the first week but the unhatched eggs wont be effected from copper till after hatching that's why you keep dosing for a month. keep in mind copper can leave behind a residue in gravel and driftwoods if you may ever plan for stingrays or shrimp in the future eh

So I dosed once with cuperamin and stopped because I couldn’t find my bn pleco, thought I poisoned him. He showed up this morning, and gourami and baby clown loaches are fine. Is it safe to continue? Also, if the loaches eat the dead snails, will they get an overload of copper and could it harm them?

I had lots of snails in my planted tank, I had all the fish die off gradually. I then went out and got several fancy goldfish. All the snails are now gone. Goldfish have been the best snail killers for me.

I have used this stuff has no effect on fish whatsoever, good or bad, but will kill alll your snails and may crash your nitrogen cycle.

im surprised the loaches didn't take care of the snails on there own. JH is there a doseage recommendation for the melafix to kill snails??? I tried it before I went cupramine on my tank. I followed the instructions on the bottle and all it did in a month was repair the damaged fins on my piranhas from them scrapping. not a snail in there was affected. cupramine smoked the little bastards. koipie doll I would remove the baby loaches if ur gonna do full dose of cupramine

No idea. I used t once trying to rehabliatate some injured fish, usngthe recommended dose, and t klled all my
snals instatly and crased my tank, I guess from the ammonia surge from the dead snqils. I have tried using it in a 10g ospital tank with nothing but fish, with no observable results.
