In the summertime I do not use heaters at all. they just come out of all the tanks and don't go back in till autumn. Adding extra aeration helps too in hot weather. I've had tanks full of fish do just fine when the temps got over 90 degrees for days at a time as long as they had a lot of oxygen.

And, this is not for everybody, but I also switch some of my fish over to outdoor ponds in summer. The ponds can be deep enough that the water stays cooler at the bottom. The fish can go down there if they need to be cooler.

This last summer we set a record for the most 90deg plus days. I unplugged all heaters also I got a case of bottled waters. I then emptied some water from each one ( so they didnt blow up when I put them in the freezer). Then drop a couple into your tank, filter to cool down the water. Change them out as needed with frozen ones, refreeze the thawed ones, rinse repeat as needed. My tanks were swinging from 78 at night to mid to upper 80s during the day.
