This are for those who thinks bichirs scales can easily be penetrated by a cichlid's teeth. Lol!

Here is a set of ganoid scales of a 10" speciemen of an endlicheri bichir. It got about almost the same thickness of a CD and have a plastic texture kinda thing. So a 22" bichir would probably even have much thicker scales let alone a 41" bichir.

whats the point in that. all that shows is how big it is in circumfrence. all you need to do is look at the edge and thats how thick it is and from the pic about 1/16th of a inch. like stated before plecos have tougher armor. why do you think some people have success with a pleco being in a pirahna tank? i can gurantee you a bichirs armor would not protect a bunch of hungry ps. not saying that bichir armor isnt tough at all but you made a statement that our government was looking into using for there armor. if this is true there must be info on the net about it so id like to see itNote: It has been reported that 'Plecostomus'-type catfish are not good tank-mates for Polypterus because they tend to attach to the scales of the bichir and damage them.

Dude that show the edge already. Stop comparing plecos to bichir as it wasn't the topics. Also stop adding piranhas in as plecos in the long run gets eaten by riranhas. I have a rhom so I know about that and it can't penetrate the scales as well although it can kill the bichir. I'm talking about if cichlids can penetrate the bichir scales. As for the government and bichirs. You're in the US so you have to find that out yourself. They obviously will not just gonna use the scales alone but you ever get this to your head that word "Modification"? As for the plecos, it's the slime they after. They don't damage the scales. Bacterial infection does.

i've seen the info on the bichir scale morphology being used in making armor...this is definitely true; i'll dig it up and post the link.

bichir scales are much more durable than most fish scales, there is no doubt about that (they are similar in structure -not necessarily composition- to gar scales and have similar durability).

comparing how bichirs would fair against P's is asinine...first off they wouldn't have evolved defenses against those fish because they were never found in the same environment...plecos, on the other hand, have some armor plating (but no scales).

the damage a pleco does is primarily to the slime coat, not the scales of bichirs, so that comparison is also pointless...they are damaging the bacterial defense of the bichir, not penetrating through the scales.--

your the one that claims the us government is using bichir scales for there armor so let see this information. i dont have to disproove it becaue im not the one that claimed it. and yes a pissed off 20 inch dovii could rip a bichir in half and for you not to think that your just plain nuts. but id love to hear more about these bichir modified bullet proof vests.:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL: they reccommend not putting bichirs in with aggressive cichlids as the cichlids can kill them. i still do and so do many others as we are monsterfishkeepers. feeding your huge bichirs a 4 inch midas prooves nothing and is totally stupid in the first place.

wow, other than wanting to at least provide the info on the bichir armor analysis, i can see that responding to your posts is pretty pointless, as you're one of those typical "my fish can totally rip apart your fish" hobbyists. good luck with your death matches, theoretical or otherwise.--

i never stated my fish could rip apart your fish ever. it was king el who feeds his bichirs small midas and claims to feed them 12 inch cichlids as well. thats what stupid. the only thing ill give ya is you made your point about the military and bichir scales as i was not going to look it up. ill give that to ya but thats it. el packs 80 bichirs in a tank and starves them so he can throw in a large cichlid. thats totally retarded. im done here. this thread is pointless

A dovii can kill a bichirs no problem so I give you that. But we are talking about if a cichlid's teeth can penetrate a bichir's scales and I don't think it can rip a bichir in half. They recommend not putting bichirs with cichlid because most cihlids will out compete them for food. Leading to a bichirs starvation. Weaker ones will soon die but the opportunistic ones will try to take down a cichlid if it can.

I used them as feeders. Just another food. Nothing is wrong with that. I like to breed my own feeders. We provide what's best for our fish and it happens to be that Midas cichlid breeds fast and grow fast to become feeders. I only feed large cichlids when it won't breed and starts to kill its partner. Also just to let you know my fish are being feed daily.
