maybe not a 20 inch bichir but deffinatly a 9 inch. are you nuts to think a massive 20 inch dovii could not penetrate a 9 inch bichirs scales and who said anything at all about penetrating the skull. of course not. thats solid bone your the out of your mind. were not talking about bone crushing so why even state that

a dovii doesn't have the crushing power that a bichir does, and it could not penetrate a 9" bichir's scales. when will you understand that the structure and physics just wouldn't allow the cichlid to do so???

yes, we realize that a 20" dovii is big, but that doesn't matter when you are talking about the structure and mechanics of it biting THROUGH bichir scales (or gar for that matter).--

i would believe the skin would be tougher once dead and dried out but not sure. i have had a few scales come off when i netted a bichir that was to large for the net.

bichir scales coming off? that is also highly unlikely. they are interlocking and practically fused...unless you were removing it with a net made out of a chainsaw they shouldn't be coming off (unless the fish was dead and in a strong state of decomposition).

A scales of bichirs is about as strong as it's skull. Even when I buried a dead bichir for many years and dug it up. The scales remain and still intact and no damage what so ever. When it comes to cichlid the bones are all over the place and not a scale present. Even some of the fins remains for bichirs. That's how durable their scales are.

very cool! if they made armor based on cichlid scales they may as well use balsa wood :)

you do not know this. noone does do you know the power per square inch of a fully grown doviis jaws? do you know how much power per square inch would be needed to penetrate the scales? probably not and thats why its a opionion my op is yes yours is no. simple

Even so it still not enough to penetrate the scales of a bichirs. A sharp knife that I used hardly cut off the scales and I have to give it pressure.. There are videos of a Dovii vs Jardini arowana, dovii vs pacu, dovii vs mala fighting in Youtube. The dovii can't even scale off any of them which have even weaker scales than the bichir.

i have seen said videos. dovii not full grown and fighting rather then hungry and needing food. could make a big difference.

also were not just talkiing about downforce from jaw pressure. how long could the body withstand that powerful head thrashing from a full size dovii wanting a meal? sooner or later the scales are going to break down and tear.
