Things in our african tanks that maybe shouldnt be there....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had 4 Giant Danios for 6 months in with my mbunas. I wanted them as dither fish to eat any excess food and keep things moving while I was building up my stock of africans. They did really well and I ended up just giving them back to my LFS once my tank was stocked.

I also gave my fish the free lobster meal by leaving a Cray Fish in a cichlid tank during its first molt. It was like 20 years ago and I had forgotten that until I read this post. Too funny.

I was just eyeing those the other day,LOL
the one concern I had was making sure they get enough to eat...I had decided against them because I figured in order to get them enough to eat I would have to pretty much overfeed my cichlids to make sure some got to the bottom....I just didnt see it working out because theyll eat till they die, those peacocks.

What has been your experiance with this?

I had a brackish water target fish in with Malawis. He didn't take any crap off them. That was only for about 6 months, then I sold him.

I have experimented with a handfull of different cichlids, and some random tropicals they either were killed or jumped. the list is as follows.

Tiger barbs--defnitly not as fast as mnay have told me. I was told to try them as a dither fish. to calm my mbunas down. yeah right.

Jewel cichlid-- He jumped. I know he was being chased, I guess suicide beats being harrased to death.

Bala sharks- Doesn't matter how big they are too skittish

Plecostomus. If they are not considerably bigge than the cichlids it will not work. Currently I have a 75 full of small tanyikans, and they already killed two. My dwarfs are the most brutal.

Shiners- I wasn't planning on keeping them, but they were a lot bigger than the cichlids in the tank just wanted to see how they would fair. out come not good.

Other cichlids that I had success with are as follows

Jack dempsys

Convicts

Red devil
I had about six or seven different mbuna with these cichlids and they did well for four years before I had to move so I gave the fish away, so I really don't know what the long term was going to be. The dempsy ruled the roost and the africans seemed to know how to stay out of his way, cause they all had their fins and showed nice color.
