Post away! :D

I really need to get a subject to do a research on, and been kinda hating looking into anything but fish and I haven't kept enough fish to know it all or see it all.

Please keep this thread serious, even though I know that it's impossible on MFK.

What level of research? Are you looking for a simple highschool experiment or research paper or like a masters thesis?

Somewhere in between.
I want a subject not too complex, with no serious experiments on the fish yet interesting and not something you'd typically find in books and whatnot.
I have to do all the research myself (with help from experts if needed) without using book or internet references.

Is this a highschool or college level assingment? I find it interesting that you cannot us books or other references as that is really the first step to the scientific process. An idea for science fair type project can be done on fish growth with certain foods. But need to know more about specifics on the assignment first. Sorry, just that I teach science so it will be easier to know how to help you if I know exactly what the criteria are.

It's a contest for high school students and nothing for school. I find it weird myself but the purpose is for us to observe, test... etc, which is why no references are allowed nor something the student already knows, they only allowed teacher/expert assistance.

you can really go wrong with breeding,
courtship in some simple cichlids and fry rearing strategy?

You could experiment with fish swimming against the current getting bigger than fish that don't.

I have 3 venustus, got them all at the same time, one of them gets in the outlet current and swims against it all day, he's now much bigger than the other venustus.

Seems like some type of neurotic behavior, or just a highly developed fish that understands the importance of exercise.

I guess you'd need at least 2 tanks to do an experiment.

How much time do you have?

very interesting!!
but I atm don't own adult cichlids to observe and only have a 2-3 month time for research, I'm gonna need serious breeders to test in such short time.

Ok. Is there a link that I can look up the criteria. In a lot of contests and assingments these days, students are not permitted to use live animals as their test subjects. A neat idea that I have done in the past is test local waterways for high amonia levels, basis of the idea is to see how "safe" it is to eat local fish. Another is the growth experiment using a couple of different foods (I did this once with frozen bloodworm vs. grass shrimp, blood worms won, mostly due to high digestability compared to grass shrimp).
