Things that have puzzled you about fish

a similar one with cichlids would be something simple like survival rates among fry, using substrate spawners vs. mouthbrooders

Ok. Is there a link that I can look up the criteria. In a lot of contests and assingments these days, students are not permitted to use live animals as their test subjects. A neat idea that I have done in the past is test local waterways for high amonia levels, basis of the idea is to see how "safe" it is to eat local fish. Another is the growth experiment using a couple of different foods (I did this once with frozen bloodworm vs. grass shrimp, blood worms won, mostly due to high digestability compared to grass shrimp).

The judges would be looking for originality (has this been done before? kinda way), good scientific procedure, personal value (what it means to the student) and simplicity.
Using animals is allowed as a part of the project and should be humane.

I like the different food idea, but to keep the originality I'd have to put a twist to it.

Ummm, a twist on food... Can't think of any off the top of my head... Feeders vs. produced food maybe, but the humane requirement might get in the way of that. Grades are due tomorrow, so my brain is hurting a bit from grading papers. Just be careful adding too fancy a twist. The less measurable vairables, usually the more valid the test as there would be less room for error. Ohh, how about tempperature and growth rate. Get a few tanks and set them a different temps, i.e. 72, 78, 84. Feed exact amounts of same food. Measure the growth rate buy weighing the fish once a week. you will need a accurate triple beam or tray style digital scale for this. Just an idea. Done well, I would give an A.

That's another good idea, but I don't think my parents would like so many new tanks... I already have a 200 gallon, and 2 20 gallon tanks in my bedroom. I'm gonna talk to them about setting up more fish tanks as I'll have a $350 on my research budget.

you can really go wrong with breeding,
courtship in some simple cichlids and fry rearing strategy?

Really want your idea done, eh? :D
I really like the idea since it's one of those with a lot of observing which won't be so hard, don't worry it's on my list and I'm gonna choose when I start comparing the different ideas you guys gave me.

-Why are saltwater fish more easily frightened than freshwater? It's nearly inpossible to get pictures of the salties at petshops, but freshies always investigate the camera.

-Do fish recognize themselves in camera lenses?
