Think I Got Some True Festae?

I don't really trust the Y bar method of id'ing festae as my female doesn't really have one and my male rarely shows his stripes. It's easier to go be the eye spot on the tail, in general a festea's will more resemble a circle and a mayan's will look more like a oval. Also my festae were more brown/gold with stripes than silver with strips as mayans appear.

I agree they look exactly like the mayan fry I was sold not to long ago, I returned them being the guy pomised me they were festae and if they werent hed take the fish back.

Yep Sorry man, I'm with everyone else on this one your spot on the tail is about twice the size of a festae. You have yourself some uros, if you want to be sure you you get the real festae check out jeff rapps site at tangledupincichlids.com. I did your method and found some real festae at a common pet shop, just miss shipped form tfd. 4.99 for a real festae..what a steal ehh? lol
Just keep checking If you are in a well developed area you will run into some eventually. I personlly would take them back and said they weren't what I was looking for and were misslabled. They should take them back or at least give you credit.
My mislabled festae is my av check it out. Hope you find one they are the best SA in my opinion.

You can't return them! in Mexico they are called red terrors, that is why they are sold as such! For us they should be labeled festae or uro. In LFS they won't be labeled this way because most of the LFS don't know the difference. Keep them just the same! they are aggressive and very personable from the start unlike festae.

Spot says Mayan. The "Y" bar isn't always sure fire.

neither is the caudal spot though. im not saying these are true festae, but the spot is not always a great way either.
