Thinking about a Tang Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will be getting the tank sometime in August, hopefully on my birthday the 22nd. I should of mentioned it earlier sorry! lol. I will make sure to get it all properly cycled and what not when the time comes, i just thought i would do my research well ahead of time. Would you suggest adding the Calvus and Shellies at the first and wait a week or two for the tank to calm down then order the Cyps. and Gobie?

lol, it's okay. If you can afford one, get a sump system; not entirely necessary, but it's pretty much the best you can get. Otherwise get a canister filter that can do at least 2 times turnover e.g your tank is going to be a 55g so get a filter rated for 110g or higher. I'm pretty sure you probably know about heater's and what not, so I'll leave that bit up to you. Go with a thin layer of sugar grain sized coral sand about 1.5" layer, it'll help in buffering your water. It is also a common believe that sand aids in the digestion process of cichlids; not so sure about that one though.. lol. As for when adding them to the tank, start with the goby, then the shelly/calvus combo, the cyps should be the last fish in the added to the tank. They are pretty sensitive to drastically changing water conditions, they have to be stable for at least 3 weeks; more comfortably around 6 - 8 weeks. The goby requires a special diet of mainly vegetable matter, i.e spirulina algae based products, just something to keep in mind.

Lol yeah i was thinking of getting a second HOB to add as the 55 gallon comes with just about everything...Lights, hood, thermometer, heater, filter, net and a few other misc. things. I definately like the canister filter idea though.
How long should i wait inbetween adding fish? Its just kind of a downer i have to order them all in seperate packages lol but if its for the best i dont really mind. So a vegetable diet for the goby, and what do you suggest i feed the others while they are still small?
Thank you for all the advice JC_P it is very much appreciated. :)

Don't bother with the HOB; they're all right, but you're better off with the canister. Try your best to add every two weeks, with proper maintenance i.e a 25% water change weekly along with testing; you shouldn't have to worry too much about nitrate spikes and what not. I can't stress enough the importance of letting the tank cycle for the 2 month time period, tangs are incredibly sensitive, so be careful. The majority of they're diet should be protein based; minus the goby. Things like frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms ect.. anything small enough for them to eat. Try NLS (New Life Spectrum) to supplement they're diet it really brings out their wonderful colors! as seen in one of my daffodils in my avatar.

And, no problem man. Always glad to help :D

Lol i like the price from that site, just dont like that it comes in air mail only :/

lol, yeah..

Lol my bad. I saw you can Fedex...Its gonna cost me about $440 to order all these fish seperately. I could always look around at different sites for the different species and check out the prices

Yeah, that would be a good idea. $440 is sort of.. a lot, even by tang standards.

yeah, i think ill try daves rare aqarium fish. Unless i can find a 20 as a holding tank for the shellies and calvus while the gobie settles in

Dave's is pretty good too, but he only ships around the states.. I have a vendor who gets some of his stuff here, but it's always 3rd party & a bit pricey. Luckily you live in colorado.
